Bovine bacterial abortion caused by Escherichia coli infection

Abstract A 3‐year‐old, 500 kg Holstein cow aborted at 7 months of gestation. On histological evaluation of the fetal lungs, abundant neutrophils infiltrated the alveolar spaces, bronchi and bronchioles with intralesional Gram‐negative bacteria, immunolabelled with Escherichia coli immunohistochemistry.

Donkeys (Equus asinus) are closely related to horses and are known to be infected by several equine pathogens. Neospora caninum and Neospora hughesi are protozoan parasites that infect horses, but they were not confirmed in donkeys up to this date.
