Neosporosis in a dog in Italy

Clinical neosporosis was diagnosed in a 2-month-old Pit Bull Terrier from Italy. Neospora caninum tachyzoites were found in semitendinosus muscle with myositis. The diagnosis was confirmed by immunohistochemical staining with anti-N. caninum specific antibodies. This is the first report of systemic neosporosis in dogs from Italy.

This work gathers reports about Neospora-infections in South America. Neospora-infections have been reported from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay. Evidence of exposure to N. caninum was mentioned in cattle, goats, sheep, dogs, cats, water buffaloes, alpacas, llamas, South American opossums, wolves and other wild canids.

Canine neosporosis in South Africa

Neospora caninum was identified in tissues of one neonatal and two adolescent dogs by a specific immunohistochemical technique during a retrospective study. The histological lesions included multifocal polymyositis, multifocal parasitic myocarditis, interstitial pneumonia, severe multifocal encephalitis and myelitis with perivascular cuffing.

Cutaneous neosporosis in a dog in Israel

Cutaneous neosporosis manifested by pyogranulomatous ulcerative dermatitis was diagnosed in an 11-year-old male Boxer. Histology revealed numerous intralesional protozoal tachysoites within macrophages and neutrophils. Occasionally, tachysoites were observed within endothelial and epithelial cells.
