MAMFEROS E PALMEIRAS NEOTROPICAIS: INTERAES EM PAISAGENS FRAGMENTADAS

open access: yes, 2009
A fragmentacao florestal e a caca criam as chamadas florestas vazias , onde extincoes ecologicas de grandes vertebrados resultam na perda de interacoes entre animais e plantas como a dispersao e a predacao de sementes. Alteracoes nesses processos afetam

Complex patch geometries maximize species richness at the expense of forest specialists

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 56, Issue 3, May 2024.
We assessed the reptile and amphibian community at 54 sites spanning four habitat types in a fragmented landscape in Costa Rica. Our study revealed that small forest patches and corridors play an important role in herpetofauna conservation, as they support a similar richness, abundance, and community composition to large forest preserves. We also found

Trials and tribulations of Neotropical plant taxonomy: Pace of tree species description

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 6, Issue 2, Page 515-527, March 2024.
Given the current unprecedented concerns for global biodiversity loss, it is critical to identify best practices for describing new species more efficiently so we can complete the inventory of the Neotropical flora and implement appropriate conservation strategies in a timely manner.

The odd roots of Campylocentrum (Angraeciinae-Orchidaceae): an anatomical study of its morphologically variable roots

open access: yesRodriguésia
Although some anatomical studies have been performed in Angraecinae, knowledge about the anatomy of the genus Campylocentrum is as yet incipient. The aim of this study is to anatomically characterize the structure of the different kinds of roots in the ...

Planting exceptional tropical tree species to increase long‐term carbon storage in assisted secondary succession

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 61, Issue 1, Page 7-12, January 2024.
By increasing the representation of exceptional species in reforestation efforts, we could potentially boost long‐term carbon storage in reforestation projects focussed on carbon sequestration. However, our approach is not a substitute for protecting existing old primary forests and reforested lands plus reducing deforestation and emissions.
