Ecosystem services generated by Neotropical freshwater fishes

To understand how Neotropical freshwater fishes (NFF) benefit society, we conducted a broad literature survey to (i) map and list the ecosystem services (ES) generated by these organisms, and (ii) investigate how human activities have affected the ecosystem service chain.

Detritivory in neotropical fish communities

Fish communities of major river systems in South America contain a high proportion of detritivorous fishes in the families Prochilodontidae and Curimatidae. These families include important fish stocks that in some regions comprise over 50 percent of the community ichthyomass.

Morphologically differentiated sex chromosomes in neotropical freshwater fish

A general survey of the occurrence of morphologically differentiated sex chromosomes in the neotropical freshwater fishes is presented. The total number of 32 occurrences involving simple XX-XY and ZZ-ZW, and multiple X1X2Y, XY1Y2 and ZW1W2 sex chromosome systems is described, with comments on the aspects of sex chromosome evolution in this fish fauna.

AbstractThe Piracema Canal is a complex 10‐km fish pass system that climbs 120 m to connect the Paraná River to the Itaipu Reservoir along the Brazil–Paraguay border.
