Ecosystem services generated by Neotropical freshwater fishes
Hydrobiologia, 2022To understand how Neotropical freshwater fishes (NFF) benefit society, we conducted a broad literature survey to (i) map and list the ecosystem services (ES) generated by these organisms, and (ii) investigate how human activities have affected the ecosystem service chain.

Detritivory in neotropical fish communities
Environmental Biology of Fishes, 1983Fish communities of major river systems in South America contain a high proportion of detritivorous fishes in the families Prochilodontidae and Curimatidae. These families include important fish stocks that in some regions comprise over 50 percent of the community ichthyomass.

Morphologically differentiated sex chromosomes in neotropical freshwater fish
Genetica, 2001A general survey of the occurrence of morphologically differentiated sex chromosomes in the neotropical freshwater fishes is presented. The total number of 32 occurrences involving simple XX-XY and ZZ-ZW, and multiple X1X2Y, XY1Y2 and ZW1W2 sex chromosome systems is described, with comments on the aspects of sex chromosome evolution in this fish fauna.

Genetic Resources of Freshwater Neotropical Fishes
2017South American rivers contain the most diverse, but also one of the more poorly known, freshwater fish faunas of the world. While significant progress is being made on understanding the systematics and taxonomy of Neotropical fish groups (Malabarba et al.

Karyotypic evolution in Neotropical freshwater fish
2000The largest freshwater fish fauna of the world is found in the Neotropical region and includes 2500 to 2700 known species [1], and a total number of species that may actually reach 5000 [2]. Until the late seventies not much was known about the cytogenetic characteristics of these fish and the cytogenetic data available about the Neotropical fish fauna

Efficiency of fish ladders for neotropical ichthyofauna
River Research and Applications, 2002AbstractThe reproductive strategies of potamodromous fish of the Plata basin involve upstream migration and passive downstream movements of eggs and larvae for dozens of kilometres. At the end of the downstream movements, the fry need marginal lagoons or bays in order for their development to be successful.

Vasotocinergic control of agonistic behavior told by Neotropical fishes
General and Comparative Endocrinology, 2019The hypothalamic neuropeptides of the vasopressin-oxytocin family (and their homologs for non-mammalian species) are key modulators of the Social Brain Network, acting via specific receptors reported in all the nuclei of this network. Different conclusive examples have proven the context-dependency actions of hypothalamic nonapeptides on social ...

Neotropical fish–fruit interactions: eco‐evolutionary dynamics and conservation
Biological Reviews, 2015ABSTRACTFrugivorous fish play a prominent role in seed dispersal and reproductive dynamics of plant communities in riparian and floodplain habitats of tropical regions worldwide. In Neotropical wetlands, many plant species have fleshy fruits and synchronize their fruiting with the flood season, when fruit‐eating fish forage in forest and savannahs for ...

Gondwana and neotropical galaxioid fish biogeography
1984The galaxioids, Southern Hemisphere salmoniforms (i.e. Galaxiidae, Aplochitonidae, Retropinnidae and Pro-totroctidae), are found in Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia, South America and South Africa, and include 4 families, 11 genera, and about 45 species.

Ascent of neotropical migratory fish in the Itaipu Reservoir fish pass
River Research and Applications, 2011AbstractThe Piracema Canal is a complex 10‐km fish pass system that climbs 120 m to connect the Paraná River to the Itaipu Reservoir along the Brazil–Paraguay border. The canal was constructed to allow migratory fishes to reach suitable habitats for reproduction and feeding in tributaries upstream from the reservoir.
