Habitat Quality and Water Availability Affect Genetic Connectivity of Platypus Across an Urban Landscape

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, EarlyView.
We developed a set of innovative landscape resistance models to identify how climatic, topographic and vegetation variables influenced gene flow in the iconic Australian platypus across a 300 km2 urbanised landscape. Our research identified topographic wetness, rainfall and vegetation cover as consistently important for maintaining landscape‐scale gene

Automatic Color Image Segmentation Using a Square Elemental Region-Based Seeded Region Growing and Merging Method [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2017
This paper presents an efficient automatic color image segmentation method using a seeded region growing and merging method based on square elemental regions. Our segmentation method consists of the three steps: generating seed regions, merging the regions, and applying a pixel-wise boundary determination algorithm to the resultant polygonal regions ...

Using Environmental DNA Sampling for Simultaneous Detection of Hosts and Their Pathogens: A Case Study With the Critically Endangered Frog Genus Atelopus

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, EarlyView.
Environmental DNA is a powerful tool for simultaneous detection of rare species and their pathogens. We confirmed the presence of Atelopus at multiple sampling locations and found that the concentration of the amphibian pathogen Bd in eDNA samples was correlated with stream characteristics and the pathogen load of the amphibian community.

The Ant Genus Sphinctomyrmex Mayr (Hymenoptera, Formicidae, Cerapachyinae) in the Neotropical Region, with the Description of Two New Species

open access: yesPsyche: A Journal of Entomology, 2012
The ant genus Sphinctomyrmex has been represented in the Neotropical Region until now by a single species, S. stali, known only from sparse localities in southeastern Brazil. Two new neotropical species are herein described, S. marcoyi sp. n.

Pheromone stereochemical specificity in the biology of the bean beetle Acanthoscelides obtectus

open access: yesAgricultural and Forest Entomology, EarlyView.
Abstract The dried bean beetle, Acanthoscelides obtectus, is a serious pest of legume crops, particularly Phaseolus vulgaris beans, and its management is challenging due to the beetle's cryptic larval stage. The major male‐produced pheromone of A. obtectus is methyl (E,R)‐2,4,5‐tetradecatrienoate, crucial for female attraction, with the (S)‐enantiomer ...

Improvement of the Han-Kobayashi Rate Region for General Interference Channel [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2010
Allowing the input auxiliary random variables to be correlated and using the binning scheme, the Han- Kobayashi (HK) rate region for general interference channel is improved. The obtained new achievable rate region (i) is shown to encompass the HK region and its simplified description, i.e., Chong-Motani-Garg (CMG) region, considering a detailed and ...
