Bioaccumulation and physiological effects of mercury in Pteris vittata and Nephrolepis exaltata
Ecotoxicology, 2008Anatomical, histochemical and biochemical approaches were used to study mercury uptake and phytotoxicity as well as anti-oxidative responses in two species of ferns [Chinese brake fern (Pteris vittata) and Boston fern (Nephrolepis exaltata)], grown in a hydroponic system.

INHERITANCE OF CRESTED FROND IN ASPLENIUM NIDUS AND NEPHROLEPIS EXALTATA
Acta Horticulturae, 2014In many fern genera with horticulture value, frond crestation is a highly desirable trait in any normally non-crested frond species. The knowledge on genetic control of the trait is valuable for a fern breeding program. An inheritance study for crested frond in Asplenium (Emperor Group) and Nephrolepis ‘Gretnae’ was thus performed.

STRUCTURAL INVESTIGATIONS OF ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION IN NEPHROLEPIS EXALTATA AND PLATYCERIUM BIFURCATUM
American Journal of Botany, 1983Nephrolepis exaltata cv. Bostoniensis, the Boston fern, exhibits extreme stem dimorphism. The plant has orthotropic, dictyostelic shoots which bear pinnatifid leaves and plagiotropic, protostelic stolons which are aphyllous. Vegetative reproduction occurs by budding from primary and secondary stolons.

The Nephrolepis Boston fern complex (including Nephrolepis exaltata [L.] Schott), Nephrolepidaceae, naturalised in New Zealand [PDF]
Nephrolepis cordifolia (ladder fern) is widely recorded as an invasive weed, and is naturalised in New Zealand. The first records of this plant being wild date from the 1970s. The presence of other native species of Nephrolepis (in particular N. flexuosa Colenso) potentially complicates the recognition of the naturalised species.
