Blockade of the mental nerve for lower lip surgery as a safe alternative to general anesthesia in two very old patients [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Purpose: Regional anesthesia is gaining popularity with anesthesiologists as it offers superb postoperative analgesia. However, as the sole anesthetic technique in high-risk patients in whom general anesthesia is not preferred, some regional anesthetic ...

Tumor-induced neoneurogenesis and perineural tumor growth: a mathematical approach [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2015
Primary tumors infrequently lead to demise of cancer patients; instead, mortality and a significant degree of morbidity result from the growth of secondary tumors in distant organs (metastasis). It is well-known that malignant tumors induce the formation of a lymphatic and a blood vascular network around themselves.

UDP‐glucose dehydrogenase variants cause dystroglycanopathy

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
Abstract UDP‐glucose dehydrogenase (UGDH) variants have been associated with hypotonia, developmental delay, and epilepsy. We report the first pathologic evidence of dystroglycanopathy in siblings with UGDH variants. Both presented around 6 months with developmental delay and elevated creatinine kinase.

Femoral Nerve Block Intervention in Neck of Femur Fracture (FINOF): a randomized controlled trial [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Objective Fractured neck of femur is a severely painful condition with significant mortality and morbidity. We investigated whether early and continuous use of femoral nerve block can improve pain on movement and mobility after surgery in older ...

SNeRV: Spectra-preserving Neural Representation for Video [PDF]

open access: yes
Neural representation for video (NeRV), which employs a neural network to parameterize video signals, introduces a novel methodology in video representations. However, existing NeRV-based methods have difficulty in capturing fine spatial details and motion patterns due to spectral bias, in which a neural network learns high-frequency (HF) components at

Comparison of continuous femoral nerve block with and without combined sciatic nerve block after total hip arthroplasty: a prospective randomized study

open access: yesOrthopedic Reviews, 2017
In association with the growing interests in pain management, several modalities to control postoperative pain have been proposed and examined for the efficacy in the recent studies.

The Impact of In‐Hospital Disease Modifying Treatments on Mental and Physical Burden in Caregiver of Patients With MS

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective People with multiple sclerosis (pwMS) may require a high level of daily assistance both for indoor and outdoor activities. Usually, relatives or friends provide daily support to MS patients who have lost personal autonomy. Several factors such as disability level and disease duration may affect the burden of care in caregivers of ...

Making a swim central pattern generator out of latent parabolic bursters [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2015
We study the rhythmogenesis of oscillatory patterns emerging in network motifs composed of inhibitory coupled tonic spiking neurons represented by the Plant model of R15 nerve cells. Such motifs are argued to be used as building blocks for a larger central pattern generator network controlling swim locomotion of sea slug Melibe leonina.

Clinical Phenotyping of Long COVID Patients Evaluated in a Specialized Neuro‐COVID Clinic

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective To report Long COVID characteristics and longitudinal courses of patients evaluated between 4/14/21–4/14/22 at the University of Pennsylvania Neurological COVID Clinic (PNCC), including clinical symptoms, neurological examination findings, and neurocognitive screening tests from a standardized PNCC neurological evaluation approach ...
