First record of brown-headed cowbird egg in a lesser scaup nest
On 16 June 1999, I found a Lesser Scaup (Aythya affinis) nest parasitized by a Brown-headed Cowbird (Molothrus ater). On 22 June the female scaup had begun incubating the 10 scaup eggs but the cowbird egg was missing, presumably ejected by the female ...

Actia interrupta is a larval tachinid parasitoid that plays a key role in regulating low‐density populations of the eastern spruce budworm. We describe its immature stages, life‐history traits, host‐searching behavior, development, and confirm its larviparous reproductive strategy.

Female Bombus vestalis cuckoo bumblebees were introduced to a flight arena containing four identical opaque boxes, featuring slits to release volatiles from the bumblebees inside. When only one box contained a developing host colony, the cuckoos were able to locate their hosts among the four boxes with 66.2% accuracy.

Open-cell parasitism shapes maternal investment patterns in the Red Mason bee Osmia rufa
Brood cell parasitism inflicts high fitness costs on solitary, nest-constructing bees. Many of these parasites enter open cells during its provisioning, when the mother bee is absent.

Egg rejection in blackbirds : a by-product of conspecific parasitism or successful resistance against interspecific brood parasites? [PDF]
Traditional theory assumes that egg recognition and rejection abilities arise as a response against interspecific brood parasitism (IBP). However, rejection also appears in some species that are currently not exploited by interspecific parasites, such as

Hamiltonella defensa infection increases honeydew production in certain aphid genotypes, potentially modifying aphid feeding behaviour. Parasitoid wasps, Aphidius ervi, are more attracted to honeydew from H. defensa‐infected aphids; though larger honeydew amounts may slightly deter searching.

Cotesia glomerata polydnavirus and venom, either alone or in combination, affect colonisation by members of the arthropod community in a natural field setting. Plants damaged by P. brassicae injected with both polydnavirus and venom were colonised more often by Mamestra brassicae caterpillars, Myzus persicae aphids and aphid parasitoids compared to ...

Parasitism of maternal investment selects for increased clutch size and brood reduction in a host
The allocation of resources to young that will ultimately be left to die appears counterintuitive. Yet obligate brood reduction has evolved in a number of species, despite the waste of reproductive investment this may incur.

Timing pattern of Common Cuckoo parasitism and its relation to host nest attendance
Classical works show the adaptive importance of precise timing of egg‐laying in brood parasitic Common Cuckoos Cuculus canorus to ensure sufficient incubation time and successful hatching. Laying in the late afternoon has been suggested to increase the chance of secretive parasitism and therefore escape the aggressive mobbing by hosts, yet this ...
