Signal transduction and activator of transcription-3 (STAT3) in patients with colorectal cancer: associations with the phenotypic features of the tumour and host [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Purpose: In patients with colorectal cancer (CRC), a high-density local inflammatory infiltrate response is associated with improved survival, whereas elevated systemic inflammatory responses are associated with poor survival.

Estimates of Southern White-tailed Ptarmigan daily nest survival from multiple sites in the Southern Rocky Mountains of Colorado

open access: yesAvian Conservation and Ecology
Estimating vital rates of avian species is important to understand population dynamics and develop potential conservation strategies that target rates for management. Avian species have reduced potential for high annual fecundity in alpine ecosystems due

Reproductive Performance of a Declining Forest Passerine in Relation to Environmental and Social Factors: Implications for Species Conservation. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
Identifying factors influencing a species' ecological niche and demography is a prerequisite for species conservation. However, our understanding of the interplay between demographic rates and biotic/abiotic factors is still poor for most species of ...

Spatio-temporal patterns of colony distribution in monodomous and polydomous species of North African desert ants, genus Cataglyphis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Summary: Two monogynous species of North African desert ants belonging to the formicine genus Cataglyphis exhibit extremely different habitat preferences, population densities, and population structures. C.

Prothonotary Warbler demography and nest site selection in natural and artificial cavities in bottomland forests of Arkansas, USA

open access: yesAvian Conservation and Ecology, 2018
Anthropogenic alterations to bottomland forests in the United States that occurred post-European settlement likely negatively affected many avian species. The Prothonotary Warbler (Protonotaria citrea), a secondary cavity nester that breeds predominantly

Landscape composition, climate variability, and their interaction drive waterfowl nest survival in the Canadian Prairies

open access: yesEcosphere, 2022
For upland‐nesting ducks that rely on grassland and wetland habitats in landscapes characterized by human alteration and a strongly fluctuating climate, information on how landscape composition interacts with climate is needed to better understand the ...

An evaluation and comparison of conservation guidelines for an at-risk migratory songbird

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Conservation, 2017
For at-risk wildlife species, it is important to consider conservation within the process of adaptive management. Golden-winged Warblers (Vermivora chrysoptera) are Neotropical migratory songbirds that are experiencing long-term population declines due ...

Black Skimmer Nest Survival in Mississippi

open access: yesWaterbirds, 2008
Abstract The nest survival of the Black Skimmer (Rynchops niger) in coastal Mississippi was modeled to better understand their breeding biology and suggest management strategies for protecting nesting colonies. During the 2004 and 2005 breeding seasons a total of 301 nests was monitored and hatching success was 67% in 2004 and 39% in 2005.
