A Lazy Approach for Supporting Nested Transactions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Transactional memory (TM) is a compelling alternative to traditional synchronization, and implementing TM primitives directly in hardware offers a potential performance advantage over software-based methods. In this paper, we demonstrate that many of the

Nested quantum search and NP-complete problems

open access: yes, 1998
A quantum algorithm is known that solves an unstructured search problem in a number of iterations of order $\sqrt{d}$, where $d$ is the dimension of the search space, whereas any classical algorithm necessarily scales as $O(d)$.

Micro and Nanostructural Diversity of Lizard Osteoderm Capping Tissue in Relation to Mechanical Performance

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study shows that lizard osteoderm capping tissue is a hyper‐mineralized hydroxyapatite layer consistently covering the superficial osteoderm surface in those species studied here, yet it varies greatly in morphology, nanostructure, and mechanical performance across species.

Application of low frequency vibration to the turning of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene

open access: yesAdvanced Manufacturing: Polymer & Composites Science
Medical implant manufacturing is a growing sector and therefore requires improved manufacturing practices. In the case of total hip arthroplasty, the most challenging component to meet the ISO standard (ISO 7206-2:2011) is the acetabular liner, often ...

"Nested and Overlapping Regimes in the Transatlantic Banana Trade Dispute" [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
The decade long trans-Atlantic banana dispute was not a traditional trade conflict stemming from antagonistic producers’ interests. Instead, this article argues that the banana dispute is one of the most complex illustrations of the legal and political ...

New SDW phases in quasi-one-dimensional systems dimerized in the transverse direction

open access: yes, 2001
The spin density wave instabilities in the quasi-one-dimensional metal (TMTSF)_2ClO_4 are studied in the framework a matrix random phase approximation for intra-band and inter-band order parameters.

Trap‐Assisted Transport and Neuromorphic Plasticity in Lead‐Free 2D Perovskites PEA2SnI4

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
An artificial retina built from lead‐free layered perovskite (PEA)2SnI4 converts light input into a persistent photocurrent and sums successive flashes over time. Micro/nanocrystals integrated on electrodes act as synapse‐like pixels that perform temporal integration directly in hardware. This in‐sensor preprocessing merges detection and computation on

Nested Pattern Detection and Unidimensional Process Characterization

open access: yesEntropy
This document introduces methods and algorithms to characterize a series of values as patterns of repeating symbols or sequences selected with the criterion to maximize the information retrieved. The method converts a series of real-number values into texts. Then, it interprets the text from a point of view specified by several parameters.

The Ta-Da Series: presentation of a technique and its use in generating a series of surprising designs [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Surprise is an emotion that is used very explicitly in personal interactions and in narrative media, yet it is not used in the same way within design. This case study presents a technique devised and used to apply the results of theoretical research on ...

MAGTWIST: A Magnetically‐Driven Rotary Actuator Using a Traveling‐Wave With Integrated Stiffness Tunability

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
MAGTWIST: A compact magnetic rotary actuator, enabling smooth, stepless rotation, and on‐demand locking. Inspired by peristalsis, a soft polymer belt generates a traveling‐wave, enabling 270° rotation when heated. Cooling stiffens the belt, locking it in position and enabling it to withstand high loads.
