Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Adaptations in agricultural water management in arid regions: Modelling farmer behaviour and cooperation on irrigation sustainability in Morocco

open access: yesAgricultural Water Management
Climate change has disrupted weather patterns and heightened drought risks in arid and semi-arid regions, requiring adaptations to crop and irrigation strategies to sustain food production. This study integrates qualitative and quantitative approaches to

Net energy evaluation of feeds and determination of net energy requirements for pigs

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Zootecnia, 2007
Feeds for pigs can be attributed different energy values according to, first, the step considered in energy utilization (DE: digestible energy, ME: metabolizable energy and NE: net energy) and, second, the method used for estimation at each step ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Photovoltaic-thermal system using shea butter as a phase change material for power generation in Nigeria, Sub-Saharan Africa

open access: yesFrontiers in Energy Efficiency
Electricity demand in Sub-Saharan Africa is rising, and in Nigeria, over 40% lack access to electricity. A photovoltaic-thermal (PV-T) system was simulated in TRNSYS, using shea butter for active cooling of photovoltaic (PV) modules.

Effect of genotype on heat production and net energy value of a corn-soybean meal-based diet fed to growing pigs

open access: yesVeterinární Medicína, 2015
The net energy (NE) system takes into account the metabolic utilisation of energy and has been proposed as a superior system for characterising the energy value of feeds.

Multi-carbohydrase effects on energy utilization depend on soluble non-starch polysaccharides-to-total non-starch polysaccharides in broiler diets

open access: yesPoultry Science, 2021
Non-starch polysaccharides (NSP), especially in water-soluble form, are a common anti-nutritional factor in cereal-based poultry diets. Consequently, carbohydrases are applied to diets to combat the negative effects of NSP on bird performance and health,

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.
