How Far Are Two Symmetric Matrices From Commuting? With an Application to Object Characterisation and Identification in Metal Detection

open access: yesMathematical Methods in the Applied Sciences, Volume 49, Issue 3, Page 1914-1942, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Examining the extent to which measurements of rotation matrices are close to each other is challenging due measurement noise. To overcome this, data is typically smoothed, and the Riemannian and Euclidean metrics are applied. However, if rotation matrices are not directly measured and are instead formed by eigenvectors of measured symmetric ...

Single‐source precursor synthesis of a compositionally complex early transitional metal nitride (V, Nb, Ta, Mo, W)Nx and its high temperature stability

open access: yesInternational Journal of Applied Ceramic Technology, Volume 23, Issue 1, February 2026.
Abstract Compositionally complex transitional metal nitrides are an interesting class of ceramics with superior chemical, thermal, and mechanical stability, with a high potential in ultra‐high temperature applications and catalysis. The exceptionality in the properties may partly be explained as a consequence of their high configuration entropy ...

Spark plasma sintering‐assisted sol‐gel Pechini method: An efficient approach for bulk InGaO3(ZnO)m synthesis and texturation

open access: yesInternational Journal of Applied Ceramic Technology, Volume 23, Issue 1, February 2026.
Abstract This article reports on the development of a spark plasma sintering (SPS)‐assisted sol‐gel method for the synthesis of dense pellets, belonging to the series of InGaO3(ZnO)m homologous phases, where m is an integer. We show that using this synthesis route, the sintering temperature is significantly decreased down to 950–1000°C as compared to ...

Blue and NIR Upconversion in Tm3+/Yb3+ Co‐Doped Yttrium Pyrogermanate Phosphor for High‐Sensitivity Optical Thermometry

open access: yesJournal of the American Ceramic Society, Volume 109, Issue 2, February 2026.
Y2Ge2O7:Tm3+/Yb3+ phosphors synthesized via solid‐state method exhibit efficient blue and NIR upconversion luminescence under 980 nm excitation, enabled by cooperative energy transfer from Yb3+ to Tm3+. The system demonstrates excellent optical thermometry performance, achieving a maximum absolute sensitivity of 156.42 × 10−2 K−1 and relative ...

Mössbauer Spectroscopy on Antimony Borosulfates Reveals Weak Coordination Behavior

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie International Edition, Volume 65, Issue 4, 22 January 2026.
The weakly coordinated trivalent antimony atoms show record‐breaking low chemical Mössbauer shifts, and in combination with several monovalent cations including silver, nitrosonium, thallium cations a rich crystal chemistry of closely related but different crystal structures. Sb(NH4)[B(SO4)2]4 showed a non‐linear SHG response comparable to that of KDP.

Transferring Porosity Across Physical States Using Metal–Organic Cages: Porous Liquids, Glasses, Rubbers, and More

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, Volume 138, Issue 1, 2 January 2026.
Discrete porous metal–organic cages provide a platform to extend porosity beyond crystalline solids. Their peripheral functionality governs inter‐cage interactions and physical state, enabling preservation of intrinsic porosity across liquids, glasses, and rubbers.
