Articulatory optimisation in perturbed vowel articulation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
A two-week perturbation EMA-experiment was carried out with palatal prostheses. Articulatory effort for five speakers was assessed by means of peak acceleration and jerk during the tongue tip gestures from /t/ towards /i, e, o, y, u/.

Neural prosthesis for the therapy of low back pain

open access: yesJournal of Automatic Control, 2008
We present methods to treat Low Back Pain (LBP) with electrical stimulation. The conventional method of treating LBP with electrical stimulation is based on mechanisms of reduction of pain. The method that we suggest uses electrical stimulation of trunk muscles at motor suprathreshold level synchronized with exercising of the trunk muscles.

Reinnervation of Muscle Targets Enhances the Separability of Motor Unit Signals Following Peripheral Nerve Transfers

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Injured or cut peripheral nerves can be surgically rerouted to reinnervate new muscle targets. This study demonstrates reinnervated muscles exhibit enhanced separability between individual motor unit signals, which can simplify signal recording and decomposition. These findings highlight the potential of reinnervated muscle to serve as a key biological

Friend, Not Foe: Lowered Tissue Reactivity to Long‐Term Polyimide Implants

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The choice of optimal neural probe designs remains a major challenge in the field of neurotechnology. This study investigated the biocompatibility of several probe variations, including material, thickness, width, and implantation strategy. It highlights the clear advantage of soft polyimide probes over stiff silicon probes for better device ...

Plasticity in the visual system is associated with prosthesis use in phantom limb pain

open access: yesFrontiers in Human Neuroscience, 2013
The experience of strong phantom limb pain (PLP) in arm amputees was previously shown to be associated with structural neural plasticity in parts of the cortex that belong to dorsal and ventral visual streams.
