Neuron-Specific Enolase as a Biomarker: Biochemical and Clinical Aspects

open access: yes, 2015
Neuron-specific enolase (NSE) is known to be a cell specific isoenzyme of the glycolytic enzyme enolase. In vertebrate organisms three isozymes of enolase, expressed by different genes, are present: enolase α is ubiquitous; enolase β is muscle-specific and enolase γ is neuron-specific.

Phylogenetic Distribution of Neuron‐Specific Enolase

Journal of Neurochemistry, 1980
Abstract: Neurons and neuroendocrine cells contain a unique isoenzyme of the glycolytic enzyme enolase which is not found in other cells. This acidic enolase isoenzyme has been designated neuron specific enolase or NSE and is easily identified by its elution on DEAE sephadex.
