Definition of Cybernetical Neuroscience [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
A new scientific field is introduced and discussed, named cybernetical neuroscience, which studies mathematical models adopted in computational neuroscience by methods of cybernetics -- the science of control and communication in a living organism, machine and society.

The aesthetics of neuroscience—and the neuroscience of aesthetics [PDF]

open access: yesBrain, 2012
Samuel Johnson, the colourful 18th-century English lexicographer, asserted that ‘No man but a blockhead ever wrote, except for money’ (Boswell, 1934). Since unlikely to be applicable to the two books discussed here, Dr Johnson's quip leads one to seek alternative motives and ask what led the authors to write these books, and why and for whom each book ...

Speed and accuracy in a visual motion discrimination task as performed by rats [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2012
We find that rats, like primates and humans, perform better on the random dot motion task when they take more time to respond. We provide evidence that this improvement is due to stimulus integration. Rats increase their response latency modestly as a function of trial difficulty.

How causal perspectives can inform problems in computational neuroscience [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
Over the past two decades, considerable strides have been made in advancing neuroscience techniques, yet the translation of these advancements into clinically relevant insights for human mental health remains a challenge. This review addresses a fundamental issue in neuroscience - attributing causality - and advocates for the development of robust ...

Matching domain experts by training from scratch on domain knowledge [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
Recently, large language models (LLMs) have outperformed human experts in predicting the results of neuroscience experiments (Luo et al., 2024). What is the basis for this performance? One possibility is that statistical patterns in that specific scientific literature, as opposed to emergent reasoning abilities arising from broader training, underlie ...
