Carotid and vertebral artery ultrasound, as well as transcranial Doppler ultrasound in neurosonology, has a long tradition in Croatia for diagnostic purposes. The first neurosonology laboratory was founded in Zagreb in the mid seventies, when continous-wave Doppler was used for analysis of the carotid bifurcation.

Over the past few years, considerable progress in neurosonology has provided an approach to extracranial and intracranial arterial diseases with more sensitivity and more specificity. These new neurosonologic techniques mainly have followed three directions: 1) to improve the identification of the morphologic characteristics of the carotid, vertebral ...

Neurosonological Examinations of Transient Ischemic Attack
2013Cerebrovascular ultrasonography is the only modality that provides real-time information about blood flow in various cervicocerebral arteries. Continuous information can be obtained over extended periods with high resolution and excellent spatial display.

Neurosonology in clinical practice.
The Journal of the Louisiana State Medical Society : official organ of the Louisiana State Medical Society, 1997The role of ultrasound in the diagnosis of cerebrovascular disease is reviewed and is compared with other existing vascular imaging modalities. The present and future role of neurosonology is discussed including transcranial Doppler and carotid Doppler duplex ultrasound.

[Neurosonological examinations].
Rinsho shinkeigaku = Clinical neurology, 2005Neurosonological examinations play an important role in the diagnosis of cerebrovascular disease. The target used to be limited to the extracranial carotid artery but is now extended to the intracranial arteries. Carotid artery ultrasound can evaluate not only the degree of stenosis but also the vulnerability of plaque.

During the last two decades, ultrasound examination has offered clinicians both spectral Doppler analysis and real-time ultrasound imaging. This union, known as Dopper ultrasound, has reached far more applications beyond the early carotid artery evaluations.
