Interchange reconnection in a turbulent Corona

open access: yes, 2012
Magnetic reconnection at the interface between coronal holes and loops, so-called interchange reconnection, can release the hotter, denser plasma from magnetically confined regions into the heliosphere, contributing to the formation of the highly ...

Tuning the Dielectric Properties of Individual Clay Nanosheets by Interlayer Composition: Toward Nano‐Electret Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The dielectric properties of clays are studied on the level of individual monolayers and functional double stacks. The material breakdown characteristics and charge storage performance are analyzed. For illustration, a defined charge pattern representing a cuneiform character is produced, written into a microscopic clay tile, referencing the origins of

Numerical simulations to the diurnal variation of wakes behind wind turbines

open access: yesMeteorologische Zeitschrift, 2010
A micro-scale numerical model was used to study the wind distribution in the vicinity of a wind turbine. Numerical results show, that the wake behind the turbine strongly depends on the time of day with a moderate horizontal extension during neutral ...

Substrate Stress Relaxation Regulates Cell‐Mediated Assembly of Extracellular Matrix

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Silicone‐based viscoelastic substrates with tunable stress relaxation reveal how matrix mechanics regulates cellular mechanosensing and cell‐mediated matrix remodelling in the stiff regime. High stress relaxation promotes assembly of fibronectin fibril‐like structures, increased nuclear localization of YAP and formation of β1 integrin‐enriched ...

Ion-Neutral Collisions in the Interstellar Medium: Wave Damping and Elimination of Collisionless Processes

open access: yes, 2010
Most phases of the interstellar medium contain neutral atoms in addition to ions and electrons. This introduces differences in plasma physics processes in those media relative to the solar corona and the solar wind at a heliocentric distance of 1 ...

Mechanically Tunable Bone Scaffolds: In Vivo Hardening of 3D‐Printed Calcium Phosphate/Polycaprolactone Inks

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A 3D bone scaffold with osteogenic properties and capable of hardening in vivo is developed. The scaffold is implanted in a ductile state, and a phase transformation of the ceramic induces the stiffening and strengthening of the scaffold in vivo. Abstract Calcium phosphate 3D printing has revolutionized customized bone grafting.

Stellar wind interaction and pick-up ion escape of the Kepler-11 "super-Earths"

open access: yes, 2014
We study the interactions between stellar wind and the extended hydrogen-dominated upper atmospheres of planets and the resulting escape of planetary pick-up ions from the 5 "super-Earths" in the compact Kepler-11 system and compare the escape rates with

Neutral stability height correction for ocean winds

open access: yes, 2011
Adjusting ocean wind observations to a standard height, usually 10 m, requires the use of a boundary layer model, and knowledge of the thermodynamical variables. Height adjustment is complicated by the fact that a necessary parameter, the roughness height, cannot be given in a closed form solution.
