Neutral winds and electrojet irregularities

Journal of Geophysical Research, 1975
The influence of the neutral winds on charged particle motions in both the equatorial and the auroral electrojet region is studied as a causal mechanism of the phase velocity change of electrojet irregularities. It is found that although the way they are affected is quite different, both electrons and ions undergo the same velocity change in the ...

The zonal neutral wind in the equatorial thermosphere

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 1988
A theoretical prediction of zonal neutral winds at the equator at F region heights is presented, using values for the ion velocity calculated with a model also due to the authors. The results, and the dynamic properties of the thermosphere that may be inferred from them, are viewed in light of information obtained from recent measurements performed ...

Neutral Winds in the Polar Cap

1980
The optical Doppler technique of the ground-based remote sensing of the thermospheric wind is reviewed with special consideration given to the admissibility of the assumptions made in the reduction of data from a single station. Examples of observations made in the Auroral Zone indicating substantial wind gradients and vertical winds are given.

Neutral wind measurements over Waltair using meteor wind radar

Journal of Atmospheric and Terrestrial Physics, 1981
Abstract A coherent pulse Doppler Radar System at Waltair (17°43′N, 83°18′E) has been used to measure neutral winds in the altitude range 80–110 km. Preliminary results obtained during July and August 1979 are presented. The diurnal component is found to be the dominant tidal mode for most of the time.

The Logarithmic Wind Profile in Neutral Stability Conditions

2021
The change in wind velocity (u) with height (z) within the surface boundary layer (SBL) is an important factor for many applications. The nature of the function \( \overline{\mathrm{u}}=\mathrm{f}\left(\mathrm{z}\right) \) depends on several factors. Chief among these is the stability condition of the atmosphere, or, more precisely, the nature of the ...

Effects of neutral-air winds

1974
Now we will briefly discuss some effects of the neutral-air winds a) on the dynamical behaviour of the ionospheric F-layer and b) on some features of the neutral atmosphere.

Neutral and non-neutral atmosphere: Probabilistic characterization and wind-induced response of structures

Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics, 2011
Abstract Atmospheric conditions vary on the basis of the local thermal stratification, giving rise to stable, unstable or neutral atmospheric conditions, that can modify the incoming wind field and the consequent structural loads and response. This paper studies the problem from two points of view.

Observations of thermospheric neutral winds at 23°S

Planetary and Space Science, 1992
Abstract Observations of night-time thermospheric neutral wind velocities from measurements of Doppler shifts of the OI 630.0 nm airglow emission line, using a Fabry-Perot interferometer, have been carried out from 23°S geographic latitude in the Brazilian sector, during the period March 1988–December 1989.

Zonal neutral winds at equatorial and low latitudes

Journal of Atmospheric and Solar-Terrestrial Physics, 2001
Abstract Fabry–Perot interferometric (FPI) measurements of thermospheric zonal neutral winds at Arequipa, Peru ( 16.7° S , 71.5° W , −2.7° dip ), and Carmen Alto, Chile ( 23.1° S , 69.4° W , −10.2° dip ), were collected during the solar minimum periods of September–October 1996 and 1997.

The effect of neutral winds on the seasonal F-region variation

Journal of Atmospheric and Terrestrial Physics, 1975
Abstract Recent measurements of the O and O 2 densities in the thermosphere have supported earlier theories that the seasonal F -region ‘anomaly’ is caused by composition changes in the neutral gas. In the present paper, the contribution of neutral winds to the F -region seasonal variation is investigated.
