Neutrinos are enigmatic subatomic particles. To date, three distinct generations of neutrinos have been discovered. There is compelling evidence that neutrinos can change generation and existing theory then suggests that neutrinos from the three generations have differing, but extremely small rest-masses.

Neutrino mixing: A theoretical overview
Il Nuovo Cimento C, 2014We present a concise review of the recent idea formulated to explain the values of the masses and mixing of neutrinos. Models based on discrete non-Abelian flavour groups are compared to the ones bases on the simpler U(1) mechanism, showing that the description of the neutrino data is still possible for both approaches.

The mechanism of the generation of the neutrino mass term at present is unknown. We also do not know if neutrinos with definite masses are Dirac or Majorana particles. However, as we will see later, it was established by all existing experimental data that neutrino mixing takes place.
