Revisiting a fundamental test of the disc instability model for X-ray binaries

open access: yes, 2012
We revisit a core prediction of the disc instability model (DIM) applied to X-ray binaries. The model predicts the existence of a critical mass transfer rate, which depends on disc size, separating transient and persistent systems.

Raman Study of Neutron Irradiated GaAs [PDF]

open access: yes, 1985
Raman scattering with near band gap excitation has been used to study fast neutron damaged GaAs. In addition to disorder activated first order scattering from zone edge acoustic phonons we observe a new peak that is attributed to a resonant mode associated with an intrinsic defect of GaAs, an As vacancy being the most likely candidate.

Resolving Complex Multiscale Structure of Magneto‐ and Electroactive Polymer Composites With an Ionic Liquid

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Multiscale ionic liquid segregation into nano‐sized domains in the unconfined amorphous polymer phase and into micron‐sized pores enables a coupled magneto‐ and electroactive responses. ABSTRACT A multiscale understanding of the structure of ionogels – nanoparticle‐free polymer composites incorporating ionic liquids – is essential for enhancing their ...

Experimental Research of Pulse Gamma Ray Radiation Effect on Neutron Irradiated NPN Bipolar Transistors

open access: yesYuanzineng kexue jishu
In order to further elucidate the influence of neutron pre-irradiation on the pulse gamma ray radiation effect of NPN bipolar transistors, the photocurrent response experiments of transient ionizing radiation were performed after NPN bipolar transistors ...

Design, Construction, and Modeling of a 252Cf Neutron Irradiator

open access: yesScience and Technology of Nuclear Installations, 2016
Neutron production methods are an integral part of research and analysis for an array of applications. This paper examines methods of neutron production, and the advantages of constructing a radioisotopic neutron irradiator assembly using 252Cf ...

Superconducting and Normal State Properties of Neutron Irradiated MgB2

open access: yes, 2006
We have performed a systematic study of the evolution of the superconducting and normal state properties of neutron irradiated MgB$_2$ wire segments as a function of fluence and post exposure annealing temperature and time.

Beyond Earth: Resilience of Quasi‐2D Perovskite Solar Cells in Space

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
In the article (DOI: 10.1002/adma.202520433), Christoph Putz and co‐workers demonstrate rigid quasi‐2D perovskite solar cells operating in low Earth orbit, delivering stable power for more than 100 days under real‐space conditions. In‐orbit performance is correlated with extensive ground‐based thermal and proton‐irradiation studies on rigid and ...

Helium effect on temperature-displacement rate equivalence in radiation-induced swelling of iron: A study by improved stochastic cluster dynamics

open access: yesNuclear Materials and Energy
In nuclear energy systems, understanding material behavior (e.g., swelling) under irradiation is critical for ensuring long-term stability and safety. While direct neutron irradiation experiments pose significant challenges, ion irradiation serves as an ...

Thermal Neutron Converter for Irradiations with Fission Neutrons

open access: yesNuclear Physics and Atomic Energy, 2007
The new research reactor FRM II at Garching started operation in March 2004. The compact core is cooled by light water, and moderated by heavy water. Two fuel plates mounted in the heavy water tank convert thermal to fast neutrons. The fast neutron flux in the connected beam tube is up to 7 · 108 s-1 cm-2 (depending on filters and collimation); the ...
