2. Neutron Sources

1986
Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the neutron sources. All neutron sources are based on nuclear reactions that free neutrons bound in nuclei. These are categorized according to the mechanisms by which this is done: fission chain reactions, fusion reactions, e--bremsstrahlung-induced photoneutron and photofission reactions, charged-particle ...

Polarized neutrons for pulsed neutron sources

Journal of Neutron Research, 2005
Polarized neutrons provide a powerful tool for research at today’s continuous neutron sources, permitting unique information to be obtained from neutron-scattering experiments and in the area of fundamental neutron physics. The information obtained is indispensable to important areas of current research such as magnetism, spin fluctuations in ...

Fusion for Neutrons: A Realizable Fusion Neutron Source

IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science, 2011
For 60 years, fusion research has been focused on fusion for energy as the ultimate carbon-free solution to the world's energy problems. It is proving a worthy but difficult task. However, it is relatively easy to produce high-energy fusion neutrons.

Neutron source for Neutron Capture Synovectomy

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2011
Monte Carlo calculations were performed to obtain a thermal neutron field from a 239PuBe neutron source inside a cylindrical heterogeneous moderators for Neutron Capture Synovectomy. Studied moderators were light water and heavy water, graphite and heavy water, lucite and polyethylene and heavy water.

Neutron Dosimetric Quantities For Several Radioisotopic Neutron Sources

Health Physics, 1992
The fluence-weighted and dose equivalent-weighted average energies, and the spectrum-averaged fluence-to-dose equivalent conversion factors have been calculated for 52 spectrum variations of 20 different radioisotopic neutron sources. An internally consistent method of determination enables comparison of values for different spectra.

Neutronics of pulsed spallation neutron sources

Reports on Progress in Physics, 2003
Various topics and issues on the neutronics of pulsed spallation neutron sources, mainly for neutron scattering experiments, are reviewed to give a wide circle of readers a better understanding of these sources in order to achieve a high neutronic performance.

Cold neutron sources

Journal of Nuclear Energy. Parts A/B. Reactor Science and Technology, 1963
Experimental work on cold neutron source development is reviewed along with the theoretical explanations devised for the results obtained. Factors governing source design, the associated cryogenic and safety problems, large source design, and experiments by which source efficiency might be increased are also discussed. (D.C.W.)
