The pantropical genus Microstachys A. Juss. is reconsidered, including, among other genera, Elachocroton F. Muell. and Sebastiania sect. Microstachyopsis (Miull. Arg.) Pax as synonyms. It is distinguished from Sebastiania Spreng. A lectotype is chosen for Cnemidostachys Mart. & Zucc., another synonym.
