ABSTRACT The pathogenesis of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) involves the colonization of hosts by colonization factors (CFs) and the secretion of enterotoxins. CFs, especially chaperone‐usher fimbriae, mediate bacterial adhesion to host cells, with extensive genetic diversity observed among isolates.
