Mixing and Matching of Hybrid Megasynthases is a Hub for the Evolution of Metabolic Diversity in Cyanobacteria

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie International Edition, Accepted Article.
Modular megasynthases, such as polyketide synthases (PKSs) and non‐ribosomal peptide synthetases (NRPSs), are molecular assembly lines that biosynthesize many pharmaceutically and ecologically important natural products. Understanding how these compounds evolve could inspire the artificial evolution of compound diversity by metabolic engineering.

A review of the lunar laser ranging technique and contribution of timing systems

open access: yesSouth African Journal of Science, 2016
The lunar laser ranging (LLR) technique is based on the two-way time-of-flight of laser pulses from an earth station to the retroreflectors that are located on the surface of the moon.

FACT - Long-term stability and observations during strong Moon light

open access: yes, 2013
The First G-APD Cherenkov Telescope (FACT) is the first Cherenkov telescope equipped with a camera made of silicon photon detectors (G-APD aka. SiPM). Since October 2011, it is regularly taking data on the Canary Island of La Palma.

Orbital Dynamics of an Oscillating Sail in the Earth-Moon System [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The oscillating sail is a novel solar sail configuration where a triangular sail is released at a deflected angle with respect to the Sun-direction. As a result, the sail will conduct an undamped oscillating motion around the Sun-line due to the offset ...

Functional morphology of the pharyngeal teeth of the ocean sunfish, Mola mola

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Many fish use a set of pharyngeal jaws in their throat to aid in prey capture and processing, particularly of large or complex prey. In this study—combining dissection, CT scanning, histology, and performance testing—we demonstrate a novel use of pharyngeal teeth in the ocean sunfish (Mola mola), a species for which pharyngeal jaw anatomy had ...

Early life functional transitions impact craniofacial morphology in osteogenesis imperfecta

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Early life behaviors have a profound role in shaping adult craniofacial morphology. During early life, all mammals undergo the dynamic transition from suckling to mastication, a period coinciding with rapid cranial biomineralization. Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), a genetic disorder that impacts the production of type I collagen, disrupts ...
