Exploration speed in Red Knots affects spring migration timing, but only after experimentally constrained fuelling conditions

open access: yesIbis, EarlyView.
Individual variation in avian migration timing is still poorly understood, yet recent evidence shows that it is closely linked to personality traits and may also be affected by food availability. Here, we examined how the interaction of the personality trait exploration speed and food availability affected the departure timing of Red Knots Calidris ...

Towards a unified publicly accessible database of avian type specimens

open access: yesIbis, EarlyView.
Type specimens represent the crucial physical reference for any scientific bird name, but type material is scattered widely across the globe, and there is still no one comprehensive source documenting the presence, status and condition of all avian type specimens, as well as associated information on nomenclature and the validity of individual names ...

Seasonal variation in preen gland secretions of Tristram's Storm Petrel (Hydrobates tristrami)

open access: yesIbis, EarlyView.
Preen gland secretions are known to vary depending on sex, season and species and are thought to play essential roles in avian life history. However, their chemical composition and functions remain largely unclear in Procellariiform seabirds with well‐developed olfactory senses. Storm petrels, known for their distinctive body odour, may use preen gland

A global perspective on the annual cycles of whimbrels

open access: yesIbis, EarlyView.
Comparative analyses are central to understanding broad‐scale patterns in avian ecology, yet their application is often constrained by fragmented and uneven data availability. Recent advances in tracking technology have generated unprecedented insights into shorebird movements, resulting in numerous studies on single populations or flyways.

An AI‐assisted workflow for generating historical species distributions from avian museum specimens

open access: yesIbis, EarlyView.
The Earth's biodiversity is changing rapidly due to human activities. Natural history collections could help us better understand how and why biodiversity is changing but are grossly under‐used in this respect. Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to transform this situation by enabling us to unlock data associated with museum specimens more ...

Comparing species accumulation within taxonomically well‐ and poorly resolved insect groups over 37 years

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, EarlyView.
Here, we used a unique 37‐year (1969–2006) freshwater macroinvertebrate time‐series, collected over seven sites in central Germany, to study biodiversity patterns and species accumulation over time. Accumulation curves of Diptera diversity have not reached a plateau in 37 years of sampling.
