Maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index and newborn telomere length

open access: yesBMC Medicine, 2016
BackgroundNewborn telomere length sets telomere length for later life. At birth, telomere length is highly variable among newborns and the environmental factors during in utero life for this observation remain largely unidentified.

Tissue‐Stimulator Platform for Electrically Stimulating Pancreatic β‐Cells for Long‐Term Functional Regulation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We present a tissue‐stimulator platform for seamless electrode integration with pancreatic tissue, applying uniform electrical stimulation through optimized design with biohybrid 3D printing. Advantageous effects of electrical stimulation on β‐cell function were observed, including enhanced calcium signaling, islet morphology, and maturation.

Validation on the First-Tier Fully Automated High-Throughput SMN1, SMN2, TREC, and RPP30 Quantification by Quadruplex Droplet Digital PCR for Newborn Screening for Spinal Muscular Atrophy and Severe Combined Immunodeficiency

open access: yesInternational Journal of Neonatal Screening
Newborn screening (NBS) for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) and severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) faces challenges. Accurate and precise SMN1 and SMN2 copy number determination, confirmed by two orthogonal methods, are vital for SMA prognostication ...

Active Learning‐Accelerated Discovery of Fibrous Hydrogels with Tissue‐Mimetic Viscoelasticity

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Active learning accelerates the design of fibrous hydrogels that mimic the viscoelasticity of native tissues. By integrating multi‐objective optimization and closed‐loop experimentation, this approach efficiently identifies optimal formulations from thousands of possibilities and decouples elasticity and viscosity. The resulting hydrogels offer tunable

Slowing fetal growth velocity from the mid-trimester may signal increased risks of perinatal morbidity and mortality: a retrospective cohort study

open access: yesBMC Medicine
Background Undetected fetal growth restriction is a major risk factor for stillbirth. Detecting small babies is a cornerstone of obstetric care, but we fail to detect most uteroplacental insufficiency impairing fetal growth, and most small fetuses ...
