Prevalence and Trends in Periodontitis in the USA: from the NHANES III to the NHANES, 1988 to 2000

Journal of Dental Research, 2005
Trends in periodontal diseases in the USA have been documented for years. However, the results have been mixed, mostly due to different periodontal assessment protocols. This study examined change in the prevalence of periodontitis between the NHANES III and the NHANES 1999–2000, and differences in the prevalence of periodontitis among racial/ethnic ...

Prevalence of unexplained erythrocytosis and thrombocytosis – an NHANES analysis

Leukemia & Lymphoma, 2020
Introduction Polycythemia vera (PV) and essential thrombocythemia (ET) are myeloproliferative neoplasms characterized by erythrocytosis and thrombocytosis, with an estimated prevalence of 22 and 24 per 100,000, respectively in the United States (Ma X et al AJH 2008). However, the prevalence of undiagnosed disease is unknown.

Characterizing children's exposures: beyond NHANES

NeuroToxicology, 2005
Biomonitoring programs, such as those being conducted at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in conjunction with the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), are of benefit to all disciplines of environmental public health. However, all programs have limitations, and like most things in science, "One size does not fit all."

Frailty in NHANES: Comparing the frailty index and phenotype.

Archives of Gerontology and Geriatrics, 2015
The two most commonly employed frailty measures are the frailty phenotype and the frailty index. We compared them to examine whether they demonstrated common characteristics of frailty scales, and to examine their association with adverse health measures including disability, self-reported health, and healthcare utilization.

Interpreting NHANES biomonitoring data, cadmium

Toxicology Letters, 2010
Cadmium (Cd) occurs naturally in the environment and the general population's exposure to it is predominantly through diet. Chronic Cd exposure is a public health concern because Cd is a known carcinogen; it accumulates in the body and causes kidney damage.

Accuracy of NHANES Periodontal Examination Protocols

Journal of Dental Research, 2010
This study evaluates the accuracy of periodontitis prevalence determined by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) partial-mouth periodontal examination protocols. True periodontitis prevalence was determined in a new convenience sample of 454 adults ≥ 35 years old, by a full-mouth “gold standard” periodontal examination.

Underestimation of Periodontitis in NHANES Surveys

Journal of Periodontology, 2011
The study design of national surveys of periodontal disease often uses partial‐mouth examination protocols to rationalize the need for resources so that the collection of data from a large number of subjects can be achieved within the available means without significantly sacrificing precision and validity.

Definition of hypertension‐associated oral pathogens in NHANES

Journal of Periodontology, 2019
AbstractBackgroundIncreasing evidence links periodontal microbiota to several systemic conditions, including high blood pressure (BP). Antibodies to oral pathogens can be considered an indirect assessment of periodontal bacterial burden. We aimed at assessing the relationship between systemic exposure to periodontal microbiota, expressed in terms of ...

A Matlab Tool for Organizing and Analyzing NHANES Data

2020
Automation of organizing and analyzing NHANES data can provide easier access to data and potentially reducing risk of introducing bias. This study investigates the potential for developing a software for this purpose. MATLAB R2016b was used for transforming and analyzing data from the NHANES.

Trends in income‐related inequality in untreated caries among children in the United States: findings from NHANES I, NHANES III, and NHANES 1999–2004
