Carbon source estimation of Banggai cardinalfish, Pterapogon kauderni, otoliths using a novel tracer Δ14C: New implications for fish metabolism and otolith calcification

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography Letters, EarlyView.
Abstract Estimating the metabolic rates of fish is crucial for understanding their physiology and ecology. However, metabolic rate information derived from otolith geochemical data (Moto) has mainly been obtained from mid to high latitudes, leaving a critical information gap for low latitude fishes suffering from climate variability.

Learning-Based Modeling of Weather and Climate Events Related To El Niño Phenomenon via Differentiable Programming and Empirical Decompositions

open access: yes, 2021
This dissertation is the accumulation of the application of adaptive, empirical learning-based methods in the study and characterization of the El Nino Southern Oscillation. In specific, it focuses on ENSO’s effects on rainfall and drought conditions in two major regions shown to be linked through the strength of the dependence of their climate on ENSO:

Signals of El Niño Modoki in the tropical tropopause layer and stratosphere [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The effects of El Niño Modoki events on the tropical tropopause layer (TTL) and on the stratosphere were investigated using European Center for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (ECMWF) reanalysis data, oceanic El Niño indices, and general climate model ...

Interpretable Machine Learning for Cross‐Cohort Prediction of Motor Fluctuations in Parkinson's Disease

open access: yesMovement Disorders, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Motor fluctuations are a common complication in later stages of Parkinson's disease (PD) and significantly affect patients' quality of life. Robustly identifying risk and protective factors for this complication across distinct cohorts could lead to improved disease management.

Coral microatoll reconstructions of El Niño-Southern Oscillation: New windows on seasonal and interannual processes

open access: yesPAGES news, 2013
Porites coral microatolls show δ18O signal reproducibility and fidelity comparable to more conventional coral growth forms. Longer-lived and fossil microatolls, which grow in suitably flushed environments, contain δ18O signals that can significantly extend instrumental records of the El Nino-Southern Oscillation.

Role of non-neuronal cells in body weight and appetite control

open access: yesFrontiers in Endocrinology, 2015
The brain is composed of neurons and non-neuronal cells, with the latter encompassing glial, ependymal and endothelial cells, as well as pericytes and progenitor cells.

Irrigation using slightly saline water from emerging desalination technologies as a solution to short‐term drought

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
With global weather patterns becoming more extreme and unpredictable, sourcing reliable irrigation water is vital for improving food security and conserving drinking water in drought‐prone areas. Emerging desalination technologies, which are still in the development phase, could potentially provide large quantities of slightly saline water for ...

Evolution of 1996–1999 La Niña and El Niño conditions off the western coast of South America: A remote sensing perspective

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 2002
We present the evolution of oceanographic conditions off the western coast of South America between 1996 and 1999, including the cold periods of 1996 and 1998–1999 and the 1997–1998 El Niño, using satellite observations of sea level, winds, sea surface temperature (SST), and chlorophyll concentration.

MARGINAL PRODUCTIVITY INDEX POLICIES FOR SCHEDULING A MULTICLASS DELAY-/LOSS-SENSITIVE QUEUE [PDF]

open access: yes
We address the problem of scheduling a multiclass M/M/1 queue with a finite dedicated buffer for each class. Some classes are delay-sensitive, modeling real-time traffic (e.g.

A mathematical morphology based approach for vehicle detection in road tunnels [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
A novel approach to automatically detect vehicles in road tunnels is presented in this paper. Non-uniform and poor illumination conditions prevail in road tunnels making difficult to achieve robust vehicle detection.
