ABSTRACT Hydroelectric dams and their turbine infrastructure threaten out‐migrating anguillid eels en route to marine spawning grounds. For decades, invested parties have attempted to guide eels away from turbines and toward safe passage routes. A subset of this work (hereafter behavioral guidance) has involved exploiting sensory biology (e.g., sight ...

Thermal drone observations capture fine‐scale population decline of short‐tailed shearwaters
Researchers used thermal drone technology to monitor short‐tailed shearwater colonies in Tasmania from 2019 to 2024, discovering a concerning 27% decline in chick numbers during this period. The study estimates that the global population of these seabirds has dropped dramatically by 41% since 1985, falling from 23 million to approximately 13.5 million ...

Strip loading in reinforced concrete: Mechanical modeling and experimental validation
Abstract Strip loading of reinforced concrete is a common problem in engineering practice. The concrete compressive strength at the load introduction can be several times higher than the uniaxial concrete compressive strength, which can be attributed to geometrical and passive confining stresses caused by load dispersion and reinforcement, respectively.

This study quantifies the likelihood of May temperature extremes in present, natural (climatology based on pre‐industrial forcings) and future climates. The attribution applies in the context of a May heatwave comparable to the record‐breaking 1944 event and the persistent record‐breaking monthly‐mean temperature from 2024.

ABSTRACT The study by Morshed‐Behbahani et al. highlights that financial barriers are not the sole obstacle to accessing infertility treatment. To ensure equal access for all, infertility treatment should be regarded as a universal human right, with the public sector assuming responsibility for its provision.

Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract The dependence on biotic pollination may constrain plant phenological responses because flowering time ultimately defines reproductive success. We proposed a local‐scale study combining long‐term phenology and experimental data to evaluate how a key functional trait—the

Our research leverages a natural, ecosystem‐scale experiment and cutting‐edge molecular isotope approaches to reveal that coral reef food web structure and energy flow can remain consistent across a gradient of human disturbance. Abstract Habitat degradation and overexploitation are key drivers of biodiversity loss globally.

Leaf trichomes are often considered a key trait contributing to drought tolerance by increasing leaf wetness and enhancing foliar water uptake. However, their function has not been examined across a wide range of environmental conditions. Our field observations and manipulation experiments on Metrosideros polymorph—a species with trichomes that vary ...

Evaluating the Economic Impacts of Climate Change on Aotearoa–New Zealand's Dairy Sector
ABSTRACT This study examines the economic impacts of climate change on Aotearoa‐New Zealand's (A‐NZ) dairy sector, a critical contributor to the nation's GDP and global agricultural trade. Using a combination of biophysical and economic modelling, including the Dairy Sector Pathways (DSP) model and a multi‐country partial equilibrium model (LTEM), the ...
