In defense of ‘niche modeling’
Trends in Ecology & Evolution, 2012There is a growing awareness of problems with the estimation of the ecological tolerances of species through correlative modeling approaches. These problems have led some investigators to argue for abandoning terms such as 'ecological niche model' and 'environmental niche model' in favor of the ostensibly more value-neutral 'species distribution model',

Niche specification and competition modeling
Journal of Theoretical Biology, 1969The concept of the ecological niche as an environmentally dimensioned hypervolume provides a theoretical method of niche description applicable to plants as well as animals. This paper proposes that the niche of a plant can be more fully specified by including plant responses to the environment as additional dimensions of the niche hypervolume.

A Niche Width Model of Optimal Specialization
Computational & Mathematical Organization Theory, 2000Niche width theory, a part of organizational ecology, predicts whether “specialist” or “generalist” forms of organizations have higher “fitness,” in a continually changing environment. To this end, niche width theory uses a mathematical model borrowed from biology.

Engineered niches model the onset of metastasis
Nature Biomedical Engineering, 2018A humanized biomaterial microenvironment that mimics the pre-metastatic niche captures disseminated tumour cells and recapitulates metastatic progression after implantation in xenografted mice.

Cognitive niches: An ecological model of strategy selection.
Psychological Review, 2011How do people select among different strategies to accomplish a given task? Across disciplines, the strategy selection problem represents a major challenge. We propose a quantitative model that predicts how selection emerges through the interplay among strategies, cognitive capacities, and the environment.

The NICHE Coordinator: A key leadership role in the NICHE practice model
Geriatric NursingThis month we focus on the role of the NICHE Coordinator, who leads NICHE program activities to advance the use of evidence-based practices that improve the quality and safety of care delivered to older adults in healthcare delivery settings. We present a new leadership development class for NICHE Coordinators to enhance their overall effectiveness ...

Qualitative properties of a niche-model
Mathematics and Computers in Simulation, 1999Abstract Within the framework of ecological systems analysis, the potential of niche formation plays an essential role, particularly in relation to the conditions of permanence or extinction of individual species. In this realm the model developed by Greve [Helgolander Meeresuntersuchungen 49, (1995) 811–820] in his study of possibilities of ...

Using ecological niche modelling to evaluate niche stability in deep time
Journal of Biogeography, 2011AbstractAim To investigate relative niche stability in species responses to various types of environmental pressure (biotic and abiotic) on geological time‐scales using the fossil record.Location The case study focuses on Late Ordovician articulate brachiopods of the Cincinnati Arch in eastern North America. Methods Species niches were modelled for a
