Niche overlap and environmental variability

Mathematical Biosciences, 1976
Abstract This article investigates whether several forms of environmental variability will limit niche overlap in a group of competing organisms. A simulation method was used to answer this question for the Lotka-Volterra model of competition. The basic result is that the maximum tolerable variability is significantly less for systems with high ...

Multivariate measures of niche overlap using discriminant analysis

Theoretical Population Biology, 1977
Abstract Two measures of multivariate niche overlap defined on p resource variables are presented. By measuring the niche overlap on the discriminant variable the multivariate problem is reduced to a univariate problem while preserving the relevant multivariate information. The niche overlap is then calculated by two different techniques.

On the Measurement of Niche Breadth and Overlap

Ecology, 1971
Measures of niche breadth and overlap that depend on the distribution of individual among resource states (ecological categories) should be independent of the relative abundance of the species and of the number of resource states considered. Such measures should also take into account the degree of distinctness of the resource states from the point of ...

Niche overlap in mud snails (hydrobiidae): freezing tolerance

Marine Biology, 1987
Tolerance to freezing was measured in four species of hydrobiid snails exposed to temperatures from 0° to-8°C and salinities from 0 to 30‰ S four up to 7 d. Experiments showed the following increasing order of tolerance to freezing: Potamopyrgus jenkinsi (Smith), Hydrobia neglecta Muus, H. ulvae (Pennant) and H. ventrosa (Montagu).

Niche Overlap and Competition in an Insular Small Mammal Fauna: A Test of the Niche Overlap Hypothesis

Oikos, 1982
The niche overlap hypothesis states that "maximal tolerable overlap should vary inversely with the intensity of competition." Rigorous testing of this hypothesis has been complicated by problems of measurement and by the difficulty of formulating operational definitions of "maximal tolerable overlap" and "intensity of competition." We test this ...

Trees have overlapping potential niches that extend beyond their realized niches

Science
Tree species appear to prefer distinct climatic conditions, but the true nature of these preferences is obscured by species interactions and dispersal, which limit species’ ranges. We quantified realized and potential thermal niches of 188 North American tree species to conduct a continental-scale test of the architecture of niches. We found strong and

NICHE — Programs for Niche Breadth, Overlap and Hypervolumes

1991
The concept of niche involves two complementary aspects, one related to the hypervolume occupied by a species or a community in the ecological space (e.g. Hutchinson 1957, 1978; Feoli, Ganis and Woldu 1988) and the other related to the pattern of resources exploitation and competition (e.g.

Some Comments on Measuring Niche Overlap

Ecology, 1980
This article discusses the usefulness of niche overlap and niche overlap measures in studying competition. It is argued that (1) neither niche overlap nor niche overlap measures can be used to estimate the intensity of competition, but (2) niche overlap can be used to determine the relative amounts of inter— and intraspecific competition, while niche ...

Market positioning: the shifting effects of niche overlap

Industrial and Corporate Change, 2012
Organizational ecology models of market dynamics emphasize the competition-inducing role of inter-organizational niche overlap—targeting similar market niches increases competitive pressure and thus reduces organizations’ fitness. Recent studies, however, have suggested that moderate niche overlap may positively influence organizational viability by ...
