Niche position drives interspecific variation in occupancy and abundance in a highly-connected lake system [PDF]

open access: yesEcological Indicators, 2019
We examined how niche position, niche breadth, biological traits and taxonomic relatedness affect interspecific variation in occupancy and abundance of two commonly-used biological indicator groups, i.e. diatoms and macroinvertebrates.

Market positioning: the shifting effects of niche overlap

Industrial and Corporate Change, 2012
Organizational ecology models of market dynamics emphasize the competition-inducing role of inter-organizational niche overlap—targeting similar market niches increases competitive pressure and thus reduces organizations’ fitness. Recent studies, however, have suggested that moderate niche overlap may positively influence organizational viability by ...

Niches evolving the positioning of a mechanical arm in a 3D environment

Proceedings 5th Brazilian Symposium on Neural Networks (Cat. No.98EX209), 2002
This paper presents an extension of the traditional genetic algorithms, called cooperative coevolutionary genetic algorithms (CCGA), which is used to evolve the angles of joints of a mechanical arm with N degrees of freedom in a 3D environment. Initially a brief introduction to this new approach will be presented.

Effects of range and niche position on the population dynamics of a tropical plant

Ecology, 2023
AbstractThe center‐periphery hypothesis predicts a decline in population performance toward the periphery of a species' range, reflecting an alteration of environmental conditions at range periphery. However, the rare demographic tests of this hypothesis failed to disentangle the role of geography from that of ecological niche and are biased toward ...

Positioning Strategy for Credit Unions: Know Thy Niche

Services Marketing Quarterly, 1991
The purpose of this paper is to examine the environment in which credit unions function and how they may position themselves in the tumultuous financial world of the 1990s. Credit unions should not try to be faithful to the old “full service" theme. Instead, they should offer specialized services to a narrow market.

On the Edge or In Between: Niche Position, Niche Overlap, and the Duration of Voluntary Association Memberships

American Journal of Sociology, 1995
This paper aims to explain a major barrier to societal integration: the remarkable homogeneity of voluntary associations. The explanation derives from an ecological theory of voluntary affiliation that asserts that organizations compete for members in a property space defined by the sociodemographic characteristics of members.

Latitudinal gradients in niche breadth and position—regional patterns in freshwater fish

Die Naturwissenschaften, 2006
The latitudinal gradient in diversity is widely acknowledged, but the mechanisms contributing to this pattern are still poorly known. Given that the species have environmental optima, a central issue is how species' niche parameters, i.e. niche breadth and niche position, vary along the latitudinal gradient.

Niche position accounts for the positive occupancy–abundance relationship of lake fishes

Journal of Biogeography
AbstractAimIf the positive occupancy–abundance relationship prevails, locally abundant species are widely distributed. Although broadly supported, studies on lake fishes have thus far contributed little to this topic, especially at intermediate and small spatial scales.

Principles of niche expansion

open access: yesProceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, 2018
Niche expansion is attained by adaptations in two generalized phenotypical traits - niche position and niche width. This gives room for a wide range of conceptual ways of niche filling.

Niche Position and Opportunities for Woody Biomass Conversion

2012
For centuries, humans used plant biomass as food and heat, but use of biomass for fuel and chemicals was largely displaced by fossil sources after the commercial utilization of coal, and more recently petroleum and natural gas. Fossil sources have certain advantages over biomass in terms of energy density, shipping, and storage.
