Investigations on the functional niche of organisms have primarily focused on differences among species and tended to neglect the potential effects of intraspecific variability despite the fact that its potential ecological and evolutionary importance is

Liver organoids: modelling complexity in homeostasis and disease
Studying liver in vitro has been challenging because simple 2D cell cultures fail to capture liver's cellular and architectural complexity. To bridge this gap, scientists increasingly use organoids, 3D liver models which better mimic liver composition and function. This review examines recent advances in liver organoid complexity and realism, discusses

AbstractAim We explored general habitat‐related explanations (niche breadth and niche position) to the contrasting status of two amphibian species that have largely overlapping ranges and habitats – the rare and declining crested newt (Triturus cristatus), and the more common smooth newt (Triturus vulgaris).

Obesity raises blood levels of PAI‐1, a protein linked to metabolic dysfunction‐associated steatotic liver disease in people with obesity. In female mice fed a high‐fat diet, partially lowering PAI‐1 led to smaller subcutaneous fat cells and lower liver cholesterol, without changing body weight or insulin sensitivity.

Niche diversification of Sphagnum in Bolivia [PDF]
Niche breadth values of Sphagnum species in the páramo and cloud forests of Bolivia are similar to those reported for Sphagnum-dominated peatlands in North America, but niche overlap values are higher for Sphagnum species in Bolivia. The pH, conductivity,

A positive relationship between regional distribution and local abundance of species is almost ubiquitous macroecological pattern, yet the mechanisms behind this pattern remain poorly understood. I tested for the relationship between regional distribution and local abundance of stream insect species in a boreal drainage system, with a specific aim to ...

Metastatic niche shaped by host factors influences disseminated cancer cell fate
Metastasis is shaped not only by cancer cells but also by the environments they encounter. This review explores how factors such as aging, diet, the microbiome, lifestyle, and environmental exposures remodel organ‐specific niches in the lung, liver, bone, and brain, influencing where metastatic cells survive, remain dormant, or grow, and ultimately ...

The evolution of NICHE: assessing the challenges and opportunities for a community health organisation in Cork city [PDF]
This study was proposed by NICHE, a community health organisation based on the North side of Cork City. NICHE wanted to capture and reflect on the role that it has played in that community for the last 20 years.

Variation of the stable isotope niches of native amphibians in ponds invaded by the red swamp crayfish [PDF]
Relationships between native and invasive species can modify trophic interactions in food webs and the diet of native species, leading to substantial changes in their trophic niches.

Hijacking emergency granulopoiesis: Neutrophil ontogeny and reprogramming in cancer
Neutrophils are highly plastic innate immune cells; their functions in cancer extend beyond the tumour microenvironment. This Review summarises current understanding of neutrophil maturation and heterogeneity and highlights tumour‐induced granulopoiesis as a systemic programme that expands immature, immunosuppressive neutrophils via tumour‐derived ...
