Formation of self-organized niobium porous oxide on niobium
Abstract Anodization of niobium in mixed H 2 SO 4 /HF electrolytes was investigated. Under optimized electrochemical conditions the formation of self-organized porous Nb 2 O 5 layers was observed. The porous Nb 2 O 5 layers consist of ordered pore arrays with single pore diameters ranging from 20 to 30 nm.

A Model for the Formation of Niobium Structures by anodization [PDF]
The fluoride use for anodizing electrolytes has been primarily responsible for the formation of nanoporous oxides at valve metals, except aluminum, since it causes a dissolution process.

OXIDATION AND CONTAMINATION REACTIONS OF NIOBIUM AND NIOBIUM ALLOYS [PDF]
Niobium was found to react linearly with air (600 to 1200 deg c) and with oxygen (400 to 1400 deg c). At 1400 deg c, a very rapid reaction with oxygen was observed. Contamination hardening during oxidation was attributed to diffusion of oxygen into the metal from the predominantly Nb/sub 2/O/sub 5/ scale.
