What is a Nissen fundoplication? [PDF]
The name of Rudolf Nissen is associated with total fundophcation for control of gastroesophageal reflux. By total fundophcation, one understand the wrapping of the lower esophagus with the combination of the anterior and posterior wall of the fundus, much hke a Witzel type of gastrostomy.

Transabdominal Fundoplication (Nissen) [PDF]
Reflux esophagitis without good response to medical therapy, whether or not an anatomical hiatus hernia is present. If a previous operation has been performed at the esophagogastric junction for reflux, a transthoracic or thoracoabdominal approach is preferred.

Background: Laparoscopic surgery is beneficial to the patient but challenging for the surgeon. The visual axis is not the same as the operative axis. The surgeon must manipulate long, sharp instruments through a fixed opening under the control of a two-dimensional monitor and without the help of any tactile sensation.

The economics of laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication
Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, 2003A major impetus for laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication (LNF) is its purported cost savings compared with medical therapy, but few studies have examined these economic outcomes. The aim was to analyze health care costs and use among a cohort of patients undergoing LNF and compare them with patients with medically treated gastroesophageal reflux disease (

Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication in children
Surgical Endoscopy, 1995Laparoscopic surgery for the definitive treatment of gastroesophageal reflux (GOR) has become an accepted alternative to conventional techniques in adults. Although relatively rare, GOR in children represents an important clinical entity with symptoms including failure to thrive, nocturnal dyspnea, and vomiting.

Transabdominal Nissen Fundoplication [PDF]
Nissen fundoplication is offered to patients who have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) refractory to maximal medical management. The open transabdominal Nissen fundoplication which is an effective elective anti-reflux procedure has now been replaced by its laparoscopic counterpart.
