Abstract Streptophyte algae are the closest relatives to land plants; their latest common ancestor performed the most drastic adaptation in plant evolution around 500 million years ago: the conquest of land. Besides other adaptations, this step required changes in cell wall composition.

Abstract Charophytes are a key group of submerged macrophytes in temperate hardwater lakes, but have declined or been replaced by angiosperms as a result of eutrophication for more than 100 years. At present, this process is continuing in many European lakes despite an overall reduced nutrient loading.

Abstract In a time of rapid environmental changes, identification of the effects of climate warming on charophytes (Characeae, Charophyta) will enable the optimization of conservation measures, especially for extremely rare species. Lychnothamnus barbatus is one of the rarest charophytes worldwide, which has decreased in the number of occupied sites ...

Hidden introductions of freshwater red algae via the aquarium trade exposed by DNA barcodes
By DNA barcoding ~200 specimens of freshwater red macroalgae from the field and aquaria with the applications of DNA‐based algorithm species delimitation, this large‐scale survey not only revealed the hidden biodiversity and introduction of these hitchhiking aquarium inhabitants but also showed that the aquarium trade could facilitate their global ...
