Nitinol wire heat engine

The purpose of this project was to improve upon a design created by McDonnell Douglas Astronautics Company in 1978 for a Nitinol wire heat engine. The goal of our project was to design, build, and test a one-unit cell heat engine and prove that it would be capable of recycling low temperature waste heat (~ 90°C).

Fractography of Nitinol

Abstract This article focuses on the fractography of Nitinol, a shape memory alloy of nickel and titanium, in superelastic biomedical applications, which primarily comprise drawn and/or laser-cut wire and tube components. Overload fracture, hydrogen embrittlement fracture, and fatigue fracture are discussed in detail.
