Abstract Turf toe is a hallux metatarsophalangeal joint (MTPJ) injury seen in sports like football and soccer where the foot experiences axial load while fixed to the ground with the great toe hyperextended at the MTPJ. Depending on severity, turf toe can be quite devastating in athletes and can require operative intervention.
