Differential impacts of nitrogen compounds on soil acid phosphatase activity in a meadow steppe

open access: yesEcological Processes
Background Nitrogen (N) addition profoundly alters soil phosphatase activities and induces widespread microbial phosphorus (P) limitation in grassland ecosystems.

Nitrogen-obtaining and -conserving strategies in xylotrophic basidiomycetes

open access: yes, 2020
Nitrogen in sufficient quantities is strictly necessary for all living organisms. In this study, the ability of some xylotrophic basidiomycetes to grow extremely long on a solid growth medium full of carbon nutrition but lacking a nitrogen source in its ...

Structures of mycobacterial 3‐methylcrotonyl‐CoA carboxylase reveal carrier‐domain translocation between catalytic sites

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mycobacterial 3‐methylcrotonyl‐CoA carboxylase uses a mobile biotin‐carrying domain to shuttle a carboxyl group between two catalytic sites, enabling carboxylation of 3‐methylcrotonyl‐CoA during leucine breakdown. Cryo‐electron microscopy captures the carrier at both sites and reveals an inward loop movement that may prevent futile rebinding to the ...

Nitrous Oxide Emissions from an Alpine Grassland as Affected by Nitrogen Addition

open access: yesAtmosphere, 2021
Nitrogen (N) addition is an important nutrient strategy for alpine grassland in northwestern China to improve productivity for livestock needs. A field experiment was conducted in a semi-arid alpine grassland in northwestern China to investigate the ...

The Shewanella oneidensis Fic enzyme SoFic targets the switch‐I region of EF‐Tu for AMPylation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fic enzymes mediate diverse post‐translational modifications across all domains of life, including AMPylation. Prokaryotic EF‐Tu can be AMPylated and deAMPylated by the conserved Fic enzyme SoFic. Structural and biochemical approaches were used to characterize the effect of AMPylation on EF‐Tu, SoFic's enzymatic activities, and the enzyme‐target ...

The evaluation of ground based remote sensing systems for canopy nitrogen management in winter wheat [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Nitrogen management is a crucial issue in terms of environmental and economical efficiency for winter wheat husbandry. Precision Agriculture in particular Remote Sensing, has been used to determine the variability of the crop.

Interruption after Short-Term Nitrogen Additions Improves Ecological Stability of Larix olgensis Forest Soil by Affecting Bacterial Communities

open access: yesMicroorganisms
Atmospheric nitrogen deposition can alter soil microbial communities and further impact the structure and function of forest ecosystems. However, most studies are focused on positive or negative effects after nitrogen addition, and few studies pay ...

Tea Bags—Standard Materials for Testing Impacts of Nitrogen Addition on Litter Decomposition in Aquatic Ecosystems?

open access: yesNitrogen, 2021
How the anthropogenic addition of nutrients, especially nitrogen (N), impacts litter decomposition has attracted extensive attention, but how environmental factors other than nutrients affect the impacts of N addition on litter decomposition is less ...

L‐aspartate oxidase provides new insights into fumarate reduction in anaerobic darkness in Synechocystis sp. PCC6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Synechocystis strains deficient in succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) secrete more succinate than the WT under dark anaerobic conditions, supporting that SDH then primarily acts as SDH, not as a fumarate reductase. L‐aspartate oxidase (Laspo) from Synechocystis is functional under anaerobic conditions, reducing fumarate to succinate.

Do long-term high nitrogen inputs change the composition of soil dissolved organic matter in a primary tropical forest?

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Letters, 2022
Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a key role in forest carbon biogeochemistry by linking soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration and water fluxes, which is further shaped by elevated atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition.
