Cyclic azapeptide CD36 ligand attenuates cardiac injury and reduces long‐chain fatty acid accumulation after myocardial ischemia–reperfusion in mice

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In a murine model of myocardial ischemia and reperfusion (MI/R), the CD36 azapeptide ligand MPE‐298 reduces cardiac injury and transiently lowers left ventricular long‐chain fatty acids (LCFAs) accumulation 3 h after reperfusion, accompanied by a decrease of oxidative stress and inflammation‐associated genes' expression in the heart and adipose tissue.

The crystal structure of the Borrelia burgdorferi nicotinamidase BBE22 resolves a long‐standing annotation error

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The crystal structure of Borrelia burgdorferi nicotinamidase (PncA/BBE22) reveals the correct full‐length protein initiated from a non‐canonical AUU start codon. The structure validates previous biochemical findings and resolves a long‐standing annotation error, demonstrating that the truncated database sequence is structurally incompatible with the ...

How phagocytic cells kill bacteria: Lessons from a professional killer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
How phagocytic cells ingest and kill bacteria has been studied for more than a century, but many questions remain unanswered. The study of the amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum brings new answers, and new questions. Professional phagocytic cells such as neutrophils and macrophages, as well as free‐living soil amoebae like Dictyostelium discoideum, employ

Puddling against dry plowing for lowland rice culture in Surinam : effect on soil and plant, and interactions with irrigation and nitrogen dressing

open access: yes, 1974
The influence of tillage on rice grown on heavy Surinam clay soils was investigated in pot and field trials. Included were interactions with seed rate, nitrogen dressing and distribution, water management, and variety.

Physiological Nitrogen Isotopic Responses in Paracoccus denitrificans [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
The natural abundances of stable isotopes in our environment serve as intrinsic tracers that are incorporated into biological compounds and create unique isotopic signatures that record molecular history.

Comparison of indices for the prediction of nitrogen mineralization after destruction of managed grassland

open access: yes, 2010
Intensively managed grasslands are occasionally chemically killed with herbicide and ploughed in order to grow an arable crop. After this management, large N mineralization rates with large losses to the environment are commonly observed.
