Abstract Evaporation of liquid nitrogen from the eye or skin may cause cold burns. It may displace oxygen, causing hypoxic asphyxia. Of the nitrogen oxides NO 2 is most toxic. Following exposure, effects in the peripheral airways and alveoli can be expected; clinical symptoms are usually absent during the first hours after exposure.

It is hypothesized that higher indoor nitrogen dioxide levels cause diarrhoea in infants and that this is the result of a direct action of oxides of nitrogen on the gut. This hypothesis is tested by reviewing the reported association between methaemoglobin and diarrhoea in children and two recent reports on indoor air and diarrhoea in infants.

The pamphlet explains the chemical qualities of oxides of nitrogen, sources of oxides of nitrogen emission, health and environmental effects, and monitoring trends. There is a brief summation about what is being done about oxides of nitrogen. The relationship between ozone and oxides of nitrogen is explained.
