Abstract Evaporation of liquid nitrogen from the eye or skin may cause cold burns. It may displace oxygen, causing hypoxic asphyxia. Of the nitrogen oxides NO 2 is most toxic. Following exposure, effects in the peripheral airways and alveoli can be expected; clinical symptoms are usually absent during the first hours after exposure.

Diarrhoea and nitrogen oxides

It is hypothesized that higher indoor nitrogen dioxide levels cause diarrhoea in infants and that this is the result of a direct action of oxides of nitrogen on the gut. This hypothesis is tested by reviewing the reported association between methaemoglobin and diarrhoea in children and two recent reports on indoor air and diarrhoea in infants.

Dosimeter for oxides of nitrogen

A simple, lightweight, prototype dosimeter, based on wet chemical principles, has been developed for personal monitoring of NO2. A simple modification provides for the determination of NOx. This device requires no auxiliary equipment and is intrinsically safe for use in coal mines.

Nitrogen oxide (NO) in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia

Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine
The concentrations of nitric oxide (NO) donors in the plasma of pregnant women with preeclampsia is several times higher than in healthy pregnant women. Antihypertensive drugs acting not through the NO-mediated mechanisms normalized BP in some women with preeclampsia, but did not significantly reduce the levels of NO donors in the plasma.
