Improving nitrogen use efficiency in irrigated cotton production

open access: yes, 2022
Irrigated cotton in Australia is mainly grown on heavy textured soils which are prone to waterlogging, resulting in significant losses of nitrogen (N) via denitrification and surface run-off.

Potato growth, nitrogen balance, quality, and productivity response to water-nitrogen regulation in a cold and arid environment

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science
BackgroundThe pervasively imprudent practices of irrigation and nitrogen (N) application within Oasis Cool Irrigation zones have led to significant soil nitrogen loss and a marked decrease in water and nitrogen use efficiency.MethodsTo address this ...

Designing a Sustainable Temporary Grassland System by Monitoring Nitrogen Use Efficiency

open access: yesAgronomy, 2020
Assessing the efficiency of nitrogen application is a valuable first step in establishing an optimum N fertilizer management plan. The aim of this study was to elaborate a sustainable N management system for sown grassland installed in temperate regions,

Rapid screening of staphylokinase protein variants using an unpurified cell‐free expression system

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
An unpurified cell‐free protein synthesis (CFPS) platform enables rapid functional screening of staphylokinase variants. Direct plasminogen‐activation assays performed in microplate format provide real‐time activity readouts, allowing rapid identification and ranking of variants with improved or reduced fibrinolytic activity without protein ...

The carbon bonus of organic nitrogen enhances nitrogen use efficiency of plants

open access: yesPlant, Cell & Environment, 2016
AbstractThe importance of organic nitrogen (N) for plant nutrition and productivity is increasingly being recognized. Here we show that it is not only the availability in the soil that matters, but also the effects on plant growth. The chemical form of N taken up, whether inorganic (such as nitrate) or organic (such as amino acids), may significantly ...

Evolutionarily divergent DUF4465 domains have a common vitamin B12‐binding function

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We show that DUF4465 family proteins, widespread across bacteria from gut microbiomes, hydrothermal vents, and soil, share a common vitamin B12‐binding function. These augmented β‐jellyroll proteins bind vitamin B12 via extended loops. Our findings establish sequence‐diverse DUF4465 proteins as a widespread class of B12‐binding proteins, highlighting ...

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Breeding for improved nitrogen use efficiency in oilseed rape [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Oilseed rape has a high requirement for nitrogen (N) fertiliser relative to its seed yield. This paper uses published and unpublished work to explore the extent to which the N use efficiency (seed yield ÷ N supply) of oilseed rape could be improved ...

Response of crop yield and nitrogen use efficiency for wheat-maize cropping system to future climate change in northern China

open access: yes, 2018
Climate change and excessive fertilization will threaten the crops yields and nitrogen utilization in coming decades. The aim of this study is to quantify the response of crop yields and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) to different fertilization strategies
