Measuring mechanical motion with a single spin
We study theoretically the measurement of a mechanical oscillator using a single two-level system as a detector. In a recent experiment, we used a single electronic spin associated with a nitrogen–vacancy center in diamond to probe the thermal motion of ...

Vibrationally resolved optical excitations of the nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond
A comprehensive description of the optical cycle of spin defects in solids requires the understanding of the electronic and atomistic structure of states with different spin multiplicity, including singlet states which are particularly challenging from a

Do not let thermal drift and instrument artifacts deceive high‐temperature nanoindentation results. We compare classical Oliver–Pharr and automatic image recognition analyses across steels and a Ni alloy to quantify these effects. Accounting for artifacts reveals systematic softening with temperature, while Cr and Ni additions boost resistance ...

Eddy-Current Imaging with Nitrogen-Vacancy Centers in Diamond [PDF]
We demonstrate microwave-free eddy-current imaging using nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond. By detecting the eddy-current induced magnetic field of conductive samples, we can distinguish between different materials and shapes and identify structural defects.

The present study investigates recycling of NiTi shape memory alloys via vacuum induction melting. An ingot was synthesized from elemental Ni and Ti and subjected to three subsequent remelting cycles. Remelting increases process durations and impurity levels and adversely affects microstructures and functional properties.

Terahertz emission from diamond nitrogen-vacancy centers
Coherent light sources emitting in the terahertz range are highly sought after for fundamental research and applications. Terahertz lasers rely on achieving population inversion. We demonstrate the generation of terahertz radiation using nitrogen-vacancy centers in a diamond single crystal.

Controlling Nitrogen-Vacancy Center Spins with a Mechanical Resonator [PDF]
The spin state of the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond offers a promising platform for the development of quantum technologies and investigations into spin dynamics at the nanoscale.

We investigate the negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond using periodic density matrix embedding theory (pDMET). To describe the strongly correlated excited states of this system, the complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF ...

Current Status and Challenges in Data Collection for Aerospace Coatings Deposited by Plasma Spraying
An innovative approach has been integrated into the GRENAT project to optimize plasma spraying and coating performance. Raw materials are accelerated and melted in the plasma generated by torches, creating coatings. Monitoring sensors collect process data which are combined with ex situ characterization data.

Fabrication and quantum sensing of spin defects in silicon carbide
In the past decade, color centers in silicon carbide (SiC) have emerged as promising platforms for various quantum information technologies. There are three main types of color centers in SiC: silicon-vacancy centers, divacancy centers, and nitrogen ...
