Identification and Genomic Characterization of Two Previously Unknown Magnetotactic Nitrospirae [PDF]
Magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) are a group of microbes that biomineralize membrane-bound, nanosized magnetite (Fe3O4), and/or greigite (Fe3S4) crystals in intracellular magnetic organelle magnetosomes. MTB belonging to the Nitrospirae phylum can form up to several hundreds of Fe3O4 magnetosome crystals and dozens of sulfur globules in a single cell ...

Complete nitrification: insights into the ecophysiology of comammox Nitrospira [PDF]
Nitrification, the oxidation of ammonia via nitrite to nitrate, has been considered to be a stepwise process mediated by two distinct functional groups of microorganisms. The identification of complete nitrifying Nitrospira challenged not only the paradigm of labor division in nitrification, it also raises fundamental questions regarding the ...

Genomic profiling of Nitrospira species reveals ecological success of comammox Nitrospira [PDF]
Abstract Nitrification was long thought to consist in the stepwise oxidation of ammonia to nitrite and of nitrite to nitrate by ammonia oxidizing and nitrite oxidizing microorganisms, respectively. Recently, single microorganisms capable of complete ammonia to nitrate oxidation (comammox) were identified in the

The occurrence and role of Nitrospira in nitrogen removal systems
Application of the modern microbial techniques changed the paradigm about the microorganisms performing nitrification. Numerous investigations recognized representatives of the genus Nitrospira as a key and predominant nitrite-oxidizing bacteria in biological nutrient removal systems, especially under low dissolved oxygen and substrate conditions.
