Arsenite methyltransferase 3 is required for mitochondrial function and hepatic lipid metabolism

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
AS3MT is a protein that helps the body process arsenic, a naturally occurring toxin found in water and soil. We discovered it also helps cells make and use energy properly. Without AS3MT, cells' mitochondria do not work well, leading to fatty liver and reduced activity. Increasing AS3MT in liver cells restores energy and protects against arsenic damage,

A lipid‐sensitive food choice behavior influences aging outcomes from a longevity‐promoting diet

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
C. elegans are exposed to a variety of bacteria in their natural environment and must be able to distinguish between beneficial and detrimental food sources. We show that C. elegans exposed to the bacterium from their natural habitat, Methylobacterium, disrupts lipid homeostasis, causing worms to avoid this bacterial species and choose the laboratory ...

College Loans and Human Capital Investment

open access: yesInternational Economic Review, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT College loans facilitate access to education, but the repayment burden may distort posteducation human capital investment. We examine the role of college loans and loan repayment policies through a structural model of individuals' dynamic decisions on borrowing/saving, labor supply, and costly human capital investment. We estimate two versions

Six-parameters deformations of fourth order Peregrine breather solutions of the NLS equation.

open access: yes, 2013
We construct solutions of the focusing NLS equation as a quotient of two determinants. This formulation gives in the case of the order 4, new deformations of the Peregrine breather with 6 real parameters. We construct families of quasi-rational solutions

PtoHY5 integrates photoperiodic signals with the ABA pathway to coordinate growth cessation and dormancy in Populus

open access: yesJournal of Integrative Plant Biology, EarlyView.
In Populus, short days deactivate the growth‐promoting protein PtoHY5, turning off a growth accelerator and activating an abscisic acid‐driven brake. This directly couples growth cessation with dormancy, underscoring the role of abscisic acid in synchronizing these transitions for winter survival.

Advances in high‐resolution cryo‐volume electron microscopy (cvEM) imaging for unicellular and multicellular organisms

open access: yesJournal of Microscopy, EarlyView.
Abstract Cryo‐Focused Ion Beam Scanning Electron Microscopy (cryoFIB‐SEM) using samples fixed by high‐pressure freezing uniquely enables high‐resolution cryo‐volume Electron Microscope (cvEM) images of cell ultrastructure to be obtained from whole cells and complex tissues in their near native state. As the freezing process also preserves fluorescence,

A Genetically Encoded Marker for Imaging of Internal Plasmodium Membranes

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, EarlyView.
IMMP is a peptide‐based marker that labels internal membranes across multiple stages and species of the malaria‐causing parasite Plasmodium. It works in both live and fixed samples and supports long‐term live‐cell imaging. ABSTRACT Fluorescence microscopy is a powerful tool to analyze the subcellular architecture, and long‐term live‐cell imaging ...

On well-posedness of energy supercritical NLS on product space Rn×T4−n ${\mathbb{R}}^{n}{\times}{\mathbb{T}}^{4-n}$ (n = 0, 1, 2, 3)

open access: yesAdvances in Nonlinear Analysis
We establish the well-posedness theory for the quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) on four-dimensional tori (i.e., T4 ${\mathbb{T}}^{4}$ ), which is an energy-supercritical model. Compared to the recent breakthrough work (B. Kwak and S.

Characterization of Sec14 Domain–Containing Proteins in the Malaria Parasite Plasmodium falciparum

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, EarlyView.
During asexual blood‐stage development, P. falciparum Sec14 proteins display distinct localizations suggesting specialized roles in lipid exchange. PfSec14‐1 initially localizes to the nucleus before moving to the ER and Golgi alongside PfSec14‐4 during schizogony.
