Herding in Aid Allocation [PDF]

open access: yes
Although there exists a vast literature on aid efficiency (the effect of aid on GDP), and that aid allocation determinants have been estimated, little is known about the minute details of aid allocation.

Dynamic changes of iron metabolism and the effectiveness of health education among apheresis donors in Guangzhou under the GLMM framework

open access: yesZhongguo shuxue zazhi
[Objective] To investigate the current status of iron metabolism among apheresis donors in Guangzhou and analyze the improvement effects of health education on iron deficiency in frequent apheresis donors. [Methods] Using a generalized linear mixed model

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

How should donors give foreign aid? Project aid versus budget support [PDF]

open access: yes
We develop a theoretical model to compare the two major foreign aid modalities: project aid and budget support. These two modalities have a different impact on the production of 'developmental goods'. Firstly, conditionality can be associated with budget

Seroprevalence of HIV, HBV, HCV and syphilis in blood donors in Southern Haryana

open access: yesIndian Journal of Pathology and Microbiology, 2010
Blood transfusion is an important mode of transmission of infections to recipients. The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of transfusion-transmissible infections among blood donors.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Multilateral Aid Agencies and Strategic Donor Behaviour [PDF]

open access: yes
The paper builds on recent empirical evidence on the importance of strategic donor behaviour in aid allocation in order to develop a theoretical model where donor pressure on a recipient for influencing the aid disbursement of a multilateral institution ...

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: an Italian monocentric experience on the health assessment and eligibility of adult-related donors

open access: yesFrontiers in Oncology
IntroductionIndications for HSCT are increasing worldwide, paralleled by a growing demand for donors of therapeutic cells.MethodsHerein, we report our real-world experience of adult HPC donor assessment during a 5-year study period (2018–2023): we have ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

The donor problem [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Donors often rely on local intermediaries to deliver benefits to target beneficiaries. Each selected recipient observes if the intermediary under-delivers to them, so they serve as natural monitors. However, they may withhold complaints when feeling unentitled or grateful to the intermediary for selecting them. Furthermore, the intermediary may distort
