History of the NOAA satellite program

Journal of Applied Remote Sensing, 2007
For more than 46 years, NOAA's environmental satellites have been an integral key to life-saving weather and climate forecasts for the United States. NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, has a rich history of successfully operating geostationary operational environmental satellites (GOES) and polar-orbiting environmental ...

NOAA Polar Satellites: Optimizing the Present and Investing in the Future

2021 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium IGARSS, 2021
In this presentation, we present details on ways that the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) Program uses its investments in environmental satellites to benefit not only the NOAA mission but other countries as well. The United States component of polar satellite, the NOAA-20 and the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) satellites ...

An Operational Satellite Snowfall Rate Product at NOAA

IGARSS 2020 - 2020 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2020
A NOAA satellite snowfall rate product is being produced operationally at near real-time. The product is retrieved using measurements from passive microwave radiometers aboard ten polar-orbiting satellites. The algorithm consists of a statistical snowfall detection model and a 1DVAR-based snowfall rate estimation component.

Terrestrial Observations from NOAA Operational Satellites

Science, 1986
Important applications to oceanography, hydrology, and agriculture have been developed from operational satellites of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and are currently expanding rapidly. Areas of interest involving the oceans include sea surface temperature, ocean currents, and ocean color.

Equator crossing times for NOAA satellites

SPIE Proceedings, 2005
The local Equator Crossing Times (EXT) of all NOAA platforms have been summarized as a function of time and approximated analytically. The fit equations (superposition of two harmonic terms, with platform-specific amplitudes, frequencies, and phases) accurately reconstruct all past EXTs to within ±2 min and also allow extrapolation in time.

Antenna Automation For NOAA Satellite Images Reception

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2008
In this paper, we present a novel, precise and efficient software tool (LAAR‐TRACK) for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Satellites orbit determination. It's based on using orbital elements, which are given by the NORAD (North American Aerospace Defence) by taking into considerations orbital perturbations due to the atmospheric drag, the influence of the moon and

A study of the Microwave Sounding Unit on the NOAA-12 satellite

Proceedings of IGARSS '94 - 1994 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 1995
The microwave sounding unit (MSU) on the NOAA series of polar-orbiting environmental satellites is a four-channel Dicke radiometer making passive measurements with the channels centered at 50.30, 53.74, 54.96, and 57.95 GHz, respectively. Onboard blackbody and cold space calibrations are performed once every 25.6 seconds for each scan line.
