Bayesian finite mixtures: a note on prior specification and posterior computation [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2007
A new method for the computation of the posterior distribution of the number k of components in a finite mixture is presented. Two aspects of prior specification are also studied: an argument is made for the use of a Poisson(1) distribution as the prior for k; and methods are given for the selection of hyperparameter values in the mixture of normals ...

Nash blowups in prime characteristic [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
We initiate the study of Nash blowups in prime characteristic. First, we show that a normal variety is non-singular if and only if its Nash blowup is an isomorphism, extending a theorem by A. Nobile. We also study higher Nash blowups, as defined by T. Yasuda.

Direct Detection Signatures of Self-Interacting Dark Matter with a Light Mediator [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) is a simple and well-motivated scenario that could explain long-standing puzzles in structure formation on small scales. If the required self-interaction arises through a light mediator (with mass $\sim 10$ MeV) in the dark sector, this new particle must be unstable to avoid overclosing the universe. The decay of the

Entropic analysis of the role of words in literary texts

open access: yes, 2001
Beyond the local constraints imposed by grammar, words concatenated in long sequences carrying a complex message show statistical regularities that may reflect their linguistic role in the message.

Engineering a Spin‐Orbit Bandgap in Graphene‐Tellurium Heterostructures

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Tellurium intercalation in epitaxial graphene on Ir(111) enables the emergence of a spin–orbit‐induced bandgap with energy spin splitting. By combining STM, ARPES, spin‐resolved ARPES, and DFT, two structural phases are identified, both exhibiting tunable electronic doping.

Algorithmic equiresolution of possibly non-reduced families of singularities [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2010
This paper studies the concept of algorithmic equiresolution of a family of embedded varieties or ideals, which means a simultaneous resolution of such a family compatible with a given (suitable) algorithm of resolution in characteristic zero. The paper's approach is more indirect: it primarily considers the more general case of families of basic ...

Oxygen Defect Engineering of Hexagonal Perovskite Oxides to Boost Catalytic Performance for Aerobic Oxidation of Sulfides to Sulfones

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Ru‐substituted hexagonal perovskite SrMnO3, featuring face‐shared oxygen species, is designed as an effective heterogeneous catalyst for the aerobic oxidation of sulfides. The catalyst demonstrates high selectivity to sulfones (>99%) under mild reaction conditions (≥30 °C). Ru substitution promotes oxygen vacancy formation of face‐shared oxygen species

Des Méridionales à la cour : l’exemple des demoiselles de Saint‑Cyr (1686‑1793)

open access: yesBulletin du Centre de Recherche du Château de Versailles, 2006
Saint-Cyr is certainly not Versailles, but there was a close proximity between the Maison royale de Saint-Louis (known simply as Saint-Cyr) and the palace, links that were not merely geographic. Reserved for the daughters of impoverished French nobility,

Democracy and Nobility

open access: yes, 2015
Americans love revolutions. Our national identity began with a revolution, and a revolutionary war that lasted for eight years; and we cheer on other people’s revolutions, as though we find satisfaction in multiplying our own.
